The homeowners built a home with elements of traditional, European and rustic design. When interior designer Amy Storm, of Designstorms LLC, was asked to design the basement, she worked hard to reflect the architecture of the house while also bringing in a more current and relaxed vibe to the space.
Here, the designer shares not only all sources but also all the insights of this inspiring basement renovation.
“Hello, everyone… let me welcome you to my favorite spot in the house!” 🐶🐾
The door to the wine room is really the inspiration behind the design. That was the front door to the original house, which was built in 1919. The homeowner salvaged it and now it is installed in the basement and is the door that leads to the wine room.
The back bar counter is 36” tall, but the island is entirely at 42”. This allowed us to get that bar feeling, with higher stools and a high surface to sit at as well as a better working height for the bar tender!
We brought cedar beams in to create a separation of spaces, but keep the basement open and airy. We stained them a rich, brown gray color, to compliment the paint color on the walls and bar. Over the pool table, we clad the ceiling in T&G and stained it a darker color, to set that space apart. On the walls, we painted paneling and trim work the same color as the bar. Not only did this enhance the classic and deep, rich feeling we wanted in the basement, but it also helped conceal things we didn’t want to see, like a sump pump closet or bump outs for HVAC. Connecting the color from cabinets to wall made it feel like one, large built-in or paneled space.

Countertop is Steel Gray Leathered Granite.
The bar cabinet was custom designed by Designstorms, the wire mesh in the back bar was brought in from England and our manufacturer made the gold plaques on each cabinet, numbering them, so that different liquors can be organized inside.
Hardware is from “Look in the Attic & Co” – similar here, here & here.
The bar also features a custom shelf with chains. What a great idea!
This bar hosts an under-counter beverage fridge, wine fridge, dishwasher and microwave as well as a couple TV’s so no one has to miss anything, if they are shooting pool or grabbing a drink.
Lighting: We layered the lighting in this space. We have can lights all around, to really brighten up the space when needed, but we also filled the bar, common space and pool table area with decorative fixtures to create that dim, classic and sophisticated bar feel.
Chandelier over pool table: Gabby.
Wall sconces: Craftmade.
Our client searched high and low for the perfect pool table with dark navy felt. To celebrate the good deal he got, he felt compelled to buy a momento. A cement pig to rest on the back bar! Why a pig? As his designer, I cannot answer that, but the pig sits on the top shelf, over the TV, as a constant reminder of his good luck! (see picture below).
All of the elements chosen for this basement complement each other. There’s nothing here that feels out of place.

Hallway semi-flush: Bellacor.
The floor covering is luxury vinyl flooring. We used one with a cork back for extra insulation and chose this material to help reduce noise in the basement, as it is not as loud or hard as solid wood.
The bathroom vanity was provided by the owner – similar here.

In the family room, we brought in a large sectional, from Bernhardt, for plenty of seating and designed the TV cabinet to house additional ottomans.
