Nothing feels more like a real home than a home with traditional interiors. It’s easy to feel embraced by it the moment you step inside. This is how I feel as I scroll down this house tour by Amelia of @amelialawrence_design. Here she explains more about her Traditional Home:
“Hello everyone here at Home Bunch. I am Amelia over at Amelia Lawrence Style and I am so thrilled to be sharing my home with you. When Luciane asked me if I would be willing to share my home I felt quite honored as the homes featured here on Home Bunch are beyond exquisite and I am just getting started with our home design.
I live with my husband, two children and our Goldendoodle puppy in Northern Virginia, 30 miles outside of our Nation’s Capital. I moved to the DC area in 2002 to work for a Congressman on Capitol Hill and most recently I have been running my own wedding planning/design business. A job I absolutely loved. From planning and designing weddings at exquisite country estates in Virginia to elaborate weddings at the Smithsonian and other DC museums; it’s been exciting and I’ve loved the amazing couples I have seen tie the knot.
However, COVID really made working in the event industry a challenge and after several years of wedding planning & design I decided it was time to hang up the clip-board and walkie talkies (yes, we use them) and begin to focus more on family. My desire was to be at home more, have less stress and focus on creating a space my family loves.
My wedding planning and design business has now shifted to home design for our own home as well as beginning to help others create a space for them and their family. Homes for most people are a work in progress and I want to share with others to love the home they have no matter where they might be in the design process.
While I loved the hustle and bustle of weddings, I’m enjoying a slower pace and the challenge of recreating myself again in a different venue.
We have lived in our current home almost eight years and room by room we have been making changes. A house always seems to be a work in progress as you create a space as unique as you and your family.
If I could sum up our style, I would claim traditional with touches of modern elements. I love sprinkling in vintage or antique pieces to give our home a curated feel that makes our space feel warm and inviting.
My husband grew up in Tennessee and I grew up in New England and somehow North meets South has worked for us. We love scouring antique stores and flea markets for unique pieces that help our home tell a story. There is something about antique or vintage pieces that make a home inviting and provides so much visual interest than just picking up everything from a furniture store.
Throughout the eight years we have called this house home we have updated the kitchen and some bathrooms, re-done the staircase, added wood flooring, finished the basement, added new light fixtures and updated molding. Our large final project will be updating the master bathroom; which is currently a work in progress.

“With not a lot of opportunity to build in this area, you have to re-create what you can find. The DC region is costly, and we have been slowly updating our 90’s Virginia colonial style home one room at a time.”
“When you enter the front door, you are met with a lovely staircase and a vintage cane bench that I found on Facebook Marketplace and reupholstered. I love the look of wooden stairs with white risers so we removed the original carpet runner, stripped and re-stained the stairs. On either side of our entryway is my husband’s office and our front living room.”

“The front sitting room is not used much except for when our kids practice their flute and trumpet. It’s a lovely space and I often sit in here for some peace and quiet, when flute and trumpet practice isn’t underway of course. “The dining room joins the living room and this is one of my favorite rooms. Maybe because I love to entertain and host guests for dinner. “Through the open door-way is the bright and open kitchen. Definitely the heart of our home. Three years ago we gutted and completely remodeled this entire space. By opening up the old kitchen it allows an efficient flow for the home. We chose Dura Supreme Cabinets, honed Carrara marble countertops and a handmade subway tile. I love a white, bright open kitchen and this is where we live from cooking, to eating to doing homework. This is the hub of activity.”

“This is where we hang out, watch television and eat take out on the sofa. When we remodeled the kitchen, we removed the carpet in this room and added wood floors. I knew I wanted two sofas so we could all stretch out and be comfortable. After plopping down on any and every sofa I could shop for, I finally went with two slipcovered sofas from Ikea. My desire was to have sofas that my family could be comfortable on without me worrying about them getting ruined. If something happened to them, I could afford to replace them and so far, we have loved our Ikea Farlov sofas. The slipcovers are from Comfortworks and they have held up well and wash up beautifully.”

“My daughter loves records, record players and vintage design so we are trying to create her room around these elements. In her room we painted the walls Benjamin Moore White Dove as well as the trim to start with a clean slate. I found this lovely antique black metal headboard at an antique store and my mom brought back the lamb’s wool rug from New Zealand (similar here). The vintage flower acrylic framed painting we found at a flea market and makes for a nice statement piece. We are still working on this space and looking forward to seeing it come together.”

“Opposite the living room are two French doors leading into my husband’s home office.
