Hello, everyone! It’s really wonderful to feature this recent fixer-upper project by Erika Gervin’s of South Harlow Interiors. She recently welcomed a baby and she, along with her assistant, were kind enough to share all of the details of this home renovation. Here, Erika shares some insights. I hope you feel inspired and no longer afraid of any fixer-upper that might cross your path.
“Our Client grew up in Coronado, and is a family of four with two kids. They purchased an old historic Spanish home “fixer upper” and hired architect Christian Rice and South Harlow Interior Design team to bring the home to a Spanish modern look. Although deemed “historic” and therefore a need to keep some elements (mainly front windows and some existing roof tiles), we were able to essentially build them a new home while maintaining a nod to the original Spanish style. The client was very driven by clean modern simplicity and a minimalist approach. We achieved this with a high contrast and consistent color palette throughout the home (black, white and natural wood tones). The addition of pattern play is also used to create visual interest. We also loved having the opportunity to create drama in the bar, where it’s all-natural white oak, marble, patina aged brass elements and textural slatted wood wall played together. The bar addition was the Client’s idea, as the dining room was such a large space and they didn’t feel that they needed a large “formal dining”, but preferred the idea of entertaining in a more casual environment with friends over drinks. Sliders open off the bar/dining and spill out into the outdoor patio space inviting guests to enjoy a cocktail indoors or out. Either way, it feels like you’ve truly escaped to a scene from the Great Gatsby. We also love the indoor/outdoor living created when all the sliders are open to the sunken living area / pool out back – when home feels like a vacation. :)” – Erika Garvin of South Harlow Interiors.

Entry – “We needed this space to be both beautiful and functional! The tall flat panel lockers house all the kids “gear” even equipped with outlets for gadgets. Yet, they provide a clean modern look through flat painted black doors and drawers.” – Erika Garvin of South Harlow Interiors.
Arches add interest and a nod to the Spanish architecture influences this home features.
