What makes a house become a home? After writing about homes around the world for more than ten years, one might think that I have a list of things that would make a house become a home, but for me, what truly makes a house to become a home are the people that live in it.
Seeing @heartthatbuiltme ‘s charming 1910 farmhouse and its story, it touches my heart and makes me want to focus even more on what makes the home we live in, a place where we share and create memories.
Please continue reading to get to know this amazing woman and designer. I hope Anya touches your heart as much as she did mine and made me remember the importance of “being at home”.
“Hello all! My name is Anya, owner and designer @heartthatbuiltme and I am so honored and excited Luciane is sharing our home with you. My family and I moved into this sweet 1910 farmhouse during the pandemic. We have made it ours over the last few years. I am a mama, wife, survivor, designer and deeply passionate trajectory shifter. My own childhood was incredibly traumatic, I am lucky to be alive, and I think it’s given me a deep rooted desire to create a space that feels safe and welcoming. My business tagline is that ‘your home should reflect your heart.’ That’s not just a kitschy saying, but I truly believe that and hold it as part of every single project I take on… including my own home. I’m married to an incredible man and we have two world-changing kiddos – 15 and 9. When I say world changing I mean they are passionate and fierce. Amazing qualities that are not always easy to parent. HA!
This sweet farmhouse was built in 1910. Amazingly we are only the third owners. The owners before us had done a fairly extensive remodel, which was great. Until 2018, the home was still heated by one wood stove. When we moved in, the basement was unfinished and there was only one bathroom. That was not going to work for this family with a teenage girl, so within six weeks we had another bathroom and a finished basement….that flooded the week after we completed construction. Oh old houses and PNW torrential rain.
Hope you enjoy the photos of this charming place we call home. “
“We moved to this incredible property in November 2020. I had been desiring a change of pace and during the pandemic my husband agreed it was time for something new. We moved from a town of 150,000 living right by downtown, to a town of 10,000 with seven acres on the water. Best decision we ever made.” – Anya of @heartthatbuiltme

“This room is where our family spends the majority of our time. We wanted enough space for people to sit and be able to set down a drink, but keep the walking space open as well. With busy kids, two active dogs and friends we needed to make sure there was still room for life to be lived. I love the original shiplap walls – painting them white from the original wood tone makes the room feel bigger and is much more inviting.” – Anya of @heartthatbuiltme

“As a designer, and homeowner, I firmly believe that your home should be filled with things that make you smile and bring you joy. I love mixing vintage pieces, new finds and family heirlooms to create a space that feels like a warm hug. Mixing high end pieces with fantastically priced finds creates a cozy atmosphere. I want people to come in and feel welcome. Not be worried about breaking anything – we have a heel sized hole in our brand new drywall from one of our daughter’s friends – and feel peaceful in our home.”- Anya of @heartthatbuiltme

“We spend a lot of time in our dining room. This table is a favorite of mine – we’ve had it for over a decade. It’s natural wood, so it has signs of the life that’s been lived on it all over. This is now the fourth home this table has been in and the number of loved ones who’ve surrounded it are too many to count. It’s now often used for UNO games, long conversations and there’s often at least ten LEGO pieces somewhere upon it. It’s weird to have an emotional connection to a piece of furniture…but I really have a deep one with our table.” – Anya of @heartthatbuiltme

“This space was like ‘something from a horror movie’ in the words of our teenage daughter. We quickly turned this space into a hangout TV room for our kids and friends. We’ve watched many movies down here and had a lot of nerf wars. Amazing what some drywall and LVP can do to a space.” – Anya of @heartthatbuiltme

“This was previously just one long room that ran the entire length of the upstairs. We heard from the previous owners they called it ‘the attic’. We decided to split it in half. Use one half of it as a bathroom, the other half as a LEGO room. We are so happy with how it turned out. And especially happy to have two fully functioning bathrooms.” – Anya of @heartthatbuiltme

“Our bedroom is not very big. It’s on the main floor and right off the bathroom, so everyone sees it. I wanted it to be cozy and feel pulled together. The wallpaper creates visual interest on what would otherwise be a very large empty wall. The rug grounds the space with the iron frame bed giving the farmhouse feel. I love that we were able to keep the original light fixture.” – Anya of @heartthatbuiltme
