The very innovative architects of MVRDV presented a very interesting design called “Balancing Barn”. The Balancing Barn is a cantilevered holiday home near the village of Thorington in Suffolk. From the road, the barn is almost invisible; the front being only 7 metres wide, with a pitched roof, faces the long straight driveway approach, suggesting a small house with a traditional shape.The interesting part is that at the midpoint it starts to cantilever over the descending slope; a balancing act made possible by the rigid structure of the building; resulting in 50% of the barn being in free space, and giving a wide view over the Suffolk landscape, adjacent lake and surrounding gardens. The long sides of the structure are well hidden by trees allowing privacy inside and around the barn. The exterior is covered in a reflective material, resulting in the barn changing its exterior by reflecting the seasons.
The inspiration for this project came from a desire for people to be able to experience what it is like to live, eat and sleep in a space designed by an outstanding architectural practice.

What do you think of this project? I love seeing creative projects and this one is fantastic for that, but I wonder… is it actually something cool or fool? I think it would be really cool to visit, but I’m not sure about living in a space so unique like this. Can you imagine being here during a storm?
Do you have plans for this weekend? I told you before I had a very busy week and I’m feeling so tired lately, so I really don’t want to plan anything for this weekend. All I want is to be able to sleep more, to stay at home (no driving for the next two days, please!) and I feel I need some quiet time (how do you have that when you have three kids?). In another words, I need to do very little during this weekend so I can recharge my energy for next week.
What are you doing for yoursef during this weekend? Don’t just make plans, but ask yourself what are you needing. Are you needing to get out of the house, to have some fun, to talk to your friends, family? Or, do you need to be still for a while, just feeling the moment and relaxing your mind?
Make sure to understand your own needs and listen to them.

I could not live in this house, way to modern for me and I would be scared of it tipping. I don’t think I could ever relax. I do admire the architects that can figure out how to make this all work though. This weekend I am going to continue on my whole house de-clutter.I am about 3/4 done. I also want to go outside and work in my flowerbeds. Summers are so short in Canada, we need to get outside every chance we can get.
Fool for me, sooo bizarre! Interesting yes, could i live there? NO!
I am hoping for a relaxing weekend too…the older I get the more i appreciate them!

cool house but – just to look at! (Not to actually live there!) I too would be afraid of my kids jumping too hard inside the suspended part in a effort to tip the whole house over!
For me, this house is fool. A home is supposed to represent comfort. I would not feel at home here. It is home as trickery. I do not want to live in a “fun house.”
