Looking to spice up your kitchen’s appeal? A great way to enhance any kitchen without completely remodeling the kitchen is using LED lighting under the cabinets to add ambiance and a modern feel. There are a few special considerations to this project, but it is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. When starting this project however, you will want to make as few mistakes as possible. The more mistakes you make, the more difficult it will be to make this project work.
The first step is to do some planning. You will want to use “high intensity led” strips, but you must decide on how many. Under cabinet lighting can be tricky because you want the light to match the room light so that nothing is over saturated providing a comfortable ambiance. They will also have to be installed to last a long time. You will also need to figure out how you are going to provide power to the lights so that they shine.
There are two typical types of LED lights. There are strip lights and there are individual “puck” lights. Strip lighting has a more even flow of light that is much less pronounced than single “puck” lighting and is also easier to install under a cabinet. Puck lights offer more varying and dramatic lighting and are more reliable for room lighting such as living room lamps or bathroom lighting.
Strip lighting can be attached under cabinets in several different ways. For strictly LED strip lights that come in a tube, it is possible to purchase mounts that you can either attach to the cabinet bottom, or the the wall right under the cabinet to hold the strip. This would be the cheapest way to do it, however if you want to do it correctly, it is recommended to buy an LED strip light fixture which will be much more easy to install and usually come with brackets and a power transformer.
It is important to make sure that the lights are installed close to a power outlet. Most LED lights require only 12 watts and therefore need a transformer to change the current provided from the wall into the current required for the lights. It is also possible to instal the lights to a light switch. All you need to do is attach the wires of the switch with the transformer and then attach the transformer to the lights. This project can vary greatly with different models of homes, but most LED cabinet lighting you will buy will have instructions on how to attach your LED”s to a light switch.
