Do you have the blues this holiday season? How about the silvers or the pinks? Non-traditional holiday colors are a popular trend in home décor this yuletide, especially when it comes to decking the table for special gatherings with family and friends.
Traditional patterns and colors are a great starting point for holiday decorating but can be creatively limiting. Visual Merchandiser John Griffith with Replacements, Ltd. says, “People attach specific imagery to the holidays and get so focused on certain colors and themes, that it holds them back from daring to do something different.”
So step outside the box with this year’s holiday tablescape. Whether your desired effect is formal and elegant to playful and fun—you can create a festive table by mixing colors, finishes, and mediums. Start with your china pattern. Neutral everyday patterns can act as a blank canvas—taupes paired with pinks set the mood for a soft romantic table, while blues and silvers work well together for a winter motif. Monochromatic colors like all white, gold, black or red makes for a sleek modern vibe. You can also blend your china sets: holiday and non-holiday, casual and formal, family heirloom and new—whatever you choose, creating layers with your china will add an extra element to your table.
The use of crystal enhances your table as well. High-end cut crystal or gold/platinum trimmed patterns lend a sense of elegance to a formal table. For a pop of pizzazz, add colored crystal. Whether it is fine crystal, trimmed, or press glass, colored stemware makes a statement. Mixing patterns and eras like a Victorian etched water goblet with a modern stemless wine glass is a unique way to add interest to each place setting.
After you’ve settled on the foundation of your table, the place settings, the fun really begins—creating an amazing centerpiece and adding the little nuances and details that will make your table extra special this year. Go traditional and use a tablecloth that belonged to your grandmother or use a scrap of fabric featuring vibrant colors or bold patterns as a runner. For your centerpiece, look for items you already have in your home. Have a lovely silver pitcher or teapot not in use – who says you can’t put flowers and greenery in them? Turn extra crystal stemware upside down and put tea light candles on their feet. Different heights of silver candlesticks look lovely interspersed throughout the centerpiece. A crystal or china bowl would be festive with holiday ornaments stacked in it. Speaking of ornaments, they act as superb filler—tuck them here and there around the centerpiece, string them with fishing wire and hang them at varying lengths from your chandelier, or hand write cards and use them as place card holders in the center of each place setting.
Also look to the outdoors for added design elements. Nature’s accents like pine cones, fruit, boxwood or evergreen cuttings, and holly can enhance your theme by creating texture and dimension.
If you can’t quite abandon your sense of traditional decorating, Griffith says to keep with season colors like greens, reds and golds, but don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone like using bright apple green or fun hip designs like plaid or polka dots. You don’t have to purchase an entire set of holiday china to spruce up your table. Consider getting accent salad plates from seasonal patterns that blend with your current pattern or adding inexpensive colored drinkware to add flair.
However you choose to design your holiday table this year, just know that you’ll be creating wonderful memories for your family and friends as well as an ambiance filled with laughter and good cheer.
