Located in the western North Carolina community of Balsam Mountain Preserve, this mountain cottage is a departure from the rustic log and beam architecture that is prevalent in the region. With plans to make this a seasonal residence, the homeowners wished for a home of a higher style, incorporating classical details and traditional forms.
The interiors are inspired by the gracious summer cottages built in the area at the turn of the century, homes that married the Greek Revival and Federal styles with materials found in the mountains. This interplay became the driving force behind the design, resulting in a home that subtly expresses vernacular details within a classical framework.

Mountain Cottage with Traditional Interiors
Strong architectural details were applied to the exterior of this cottage. I am a huge fan of grambel roof line.
Exterior Paint Color: Shake stain is “Cabot semi-transparent Spanish Moss”.
Entry Portico
The elliptical shape of the portico and the rounded purlins set the tone for the softer, more fluid details inside the home.
Barn Style Garage
The barn-inspired garage attaches to the main house via a enclosed passageway.
Paint Color: Garage doors are “Sherwin Williams Garden Gate SW6167” and the trim is “Sherwin Williams Saw Dust SW6158”.
Outdoor Lighting
The lighting is handcrafted by Eloise Pickard, who uses salvaged parts and pieces from old fixtures to create new light fixtures.
Entryway
The light-filled entry hall is grand enough to greet visitors, but presents a comfortable, unimposing welcome. A three level stair tucks neatly beneath the volume of the gambrel roofline, intentionally more fitted than dramatic.
Light fixture is once again, created by Eloise Pickard.
Living Room
The entry foyer leads into the formal living room where beautiful architectural details and millwork are framed by lightly washed wood walls.
The French doors with transoms bring light in and lead to the side porch.
Kitchen
Simple, hand-crafted cabinetry and soapstone countertops create the feel of a vintage kitchen, which is perfect for this cottage.

Eating Nook
Inspiring mountain views can be enjoyed from the kitchen and eating area.
Pantry
Similar Paint Color: Benjamin Moore Lily of the Valley 905
Located at the back of the house, this pantry was designed for function and to retain a well-fitted feel.
Bedroom
With a cozy and country feel, this bedroom seems to be a great place to spend not only the night, but also the day at…
Balcony
… and if you feel like getting out of the bed, this is the view you get from your private balcony.
Bathroom
The bathroom is yet another cozy and warm space in this cottage. I like the idea of having the two vanities separated apart. It created more privacy and space to each person.
Rustic Touch
In the office, traditional board and batten trim is created with more rustic, reclaimed chestnut. Awning windows bridge the space between the piers with rough hewn lintels visible on both the interior and exterior.
Patio
On the side porch, Doric columns of hand-hewn wood rise from railings adorned with locally harvested locust branches, again uniting the classical with the vernacular. Rustic at its finest!
Guest House
A guest house on the mountain’s edge looks over the valley beyond.

Do you remember when I said I would never paint again after finishing painting my master bedroom last year? Well, guess what I bought today? Three gallons of paint! Since we’re selling our home, I decided we should lighten up the main floor with a neutral color. Our current color was chosen when we moved here almost six years ago and a lot can change in that time-frame, including my taste.
So, even though I don’t like painting anymore, I will join my husband and start painting this week and I can’t wait to have my house feeling lighter and brighter. I know the next buyers will appreciate that too! 🙂

I was fortunate to work with the builder who did this house (Morgan Keefe) on a project a couple of years back. They are true craftsmen, and this is one of my favorite houses they’ve done
