Living room looking a bit shabby? Has your youngest daughter grown out of her pretty princess room? The New Year motives many people to set resolutions to better themselves. Typical resolutions about weight loss, sleeping more or visiting new places can be thought of as a task to be completed in order to receive some sort of personal benefits. What about setting a task for yourself that would be both fun to complete and provide you with joy for years to come? Home renovation could be just your solution! Worried about costs? Don’t be…
Here are some tips on designing and assembling your perfect space on a budget.
Redecorating for the New Year on a Budget
Paint Color: Benjamin Moore 2003-10 Million Dollar Red
Step one is always to search for inspiration. The Internet has provided the most valuable source for millions of images, color palettes and advice for free! Spend some time browsing through pages and palettes until you decide on something that is feasible financially, spatially and is a style that you think holds longevity for your home. Lime green walls may be unique and exciting for a few months, but most likely that will pass. Also consider how color can affect your mood when making your selections. Red is a great color for an office, for example, as it stimulates the body and mind to increase circulation.
Once you’ve decided on the perfect look for your home, figure out which furniture and fixtures can be kept from the old room and brought into the new without ruining the integrity of the design. Perhaps you have a big dresser from your grandparents that has been gathering dust in the basement. The less you have to buy, the less you’ll have to spend!
Also consider that one of the best ways to redecorate on a budget is without a rush. With a time constraint, you may feel pressure to purchase a piece of furniture even though it may not be exactly what you’re looking for either pricewise, the shape or perhaps the size. Set some time to really search for the perfect pieces, this will give you the best chance of being totally happy with the final result. One of the best ways to “slow shop” would be to spend some weekend afternoons discovering the local thrift shops, antique boutiques and garage sales in the area. With a little time and effort you can find an absolutely great deal.
Have you ever considered making your own linens such as curtains or bed spreads? This way you can find the perfect fabrics for your new room without having to spend a huge amount. If you don’t feel that making your linens is an option for you, check out some great overstock or discount stops such as your local Marshalls, Big Lots.
One of the best finishing touches for your space would be to add a personal touch. A great way to do this is to frame some beautiful pictures of family or friends. This is much more personal than the generic framed prints that are printed by the thousands.

If you still need some extra touches or furniture items that you couldn’t find at discount shops or second-hand searches, IKEA could be a good option to complete your look on a budget. Who doesn’t love spending a day walking through their shopping maze?!
