The homeowners of this shingle cottage envisioned a new home as a homestead to be handed down from generation to generation. New England architectural elements such as the gambrel roof and the use of vernacular materials such as cedar shingles and beadboard allow the cottage to appear unchanged and unchanging. An intuitive straight forward plan connects family spaces with expansive openings of glass that foster outside summer living that opens to a screened wing breakfast room that connects the cottage to the pool.
This enchanting shingle style cottage enjoys views in every direction from Edgerton Bay to rare expanses of farmland on Martha’s Vineyard.

Cozy and with a hint of industrial style, this cottage kitchen feels welcoming without being too traditional.

The kitchen features a desk, white cabinets with bin pulls, beadboard walls and casual coastal furniture. I am loving that vintage bench!

Doors and windows are always open in this cottage to invite the ocean’s breeze in.

Beach House Garden
The planter hung on the siding was picked up locally by the owner. These particular type of planters use coco lining which is the exterior moss-like texture shown.
Cedar Shingles
According to the architect, these are Red cedar 18″ perfections. They are unstained and unpainted and were this way when photos were taken a few years after construction. Natural cedar weathers differently in different climates and locations. This house in Martha’s Vineyard is subject to driving rains and drying winds which affects the color.
Garden Shed
Between white picket fences, rose gardens, hydrangeas, Dutch doors, weathered shingles and garden sheds, this cottage is truly a place that is hard to forget and so easy to feel inspired by!
