Are you in the market for a new refrigerator? There are lots of features and styles to choose from. Here are some steps to help you choose the right refrigerator for your home.
Refrigerators can cost anywhere from $500 to upwards of $3,000+. So, the first thing you should do is figure out how much money you want to spend on a new one. Knowing what you can afford will help you narrow down the features that are available to you. For instance, if you’re not willing to spend more than $2,000, it’s unlikely that you’ll find a refrigerator with a touchscreen display. Middle range refrigerators cost between $1,500 and $2,000+. Add much more if you’re looking for a professional series.
Once you know how much you can spend, the next step is to determine the size of refrigerator you can get. In general, a family of four needs a refrigerator that has a capacity of at least 20 cu. ft. Of course, another big determiner is the space available in your kitchen, so you need to measure where you plan to put it. Make sure to take into account space for ventilation and for door opening. Cabinets above your refrigerator can also present limitations.
Refrigerators come in several configuration styles. For instance, you can get side-by-side doors with refrigerator space on one side and freezer space on the other. Another configuration is freezer space on the top and refrigerator space on the bottom. Lately, many consumers have opted for freezer drawers on the bottom with refrigerator French doors on the top. Consider your lifestyle and personal preference when choosing the best configuration style for you. Then, pick the color that will look best in your kitchen, whether it is stainless steel, white, or black.
Refrigerator innovations include things like individual compartment temperature control, touchscreen displays, and LED lighting. Energy efficiency is also an important consideration. Remember, bigger refrigerators use more energy. LG has a special door-in-door refrigerator to save power and add convenience. All of these specialty features drive up the price of your refrigerator. Choose the special features that are most important to you when making a decision.
I’m seriously considering this one. What do you guys think?
Most consumers enjoy the convenience of having a water dispenser and ice maker. However, the ice maker does take up a large chunk of space, and might not be a good option for you if you’re buying a small refrigerator. Moreover, water filters are an additional cost you have to worry about every couple of months. If you’ve never had a refrigerator with a water dispenser and ice, you’ll also have to install a water line. It’s a fairly simple project, but it does take an initial investment.
Keep these steps in mind in order to make the best decision when choosing a refrigerator for your home. Remember, there are more important things to consider than just the way it looks.

We have purchased the KitchenAid Professional series appliances for several remodels – which we’ve lived in. They are beautiful, function well and are priced higher than standard GE Monogram type appliance, but less than Viking, Wolfe and Thermador. We’re about to begin a new build – exciting – and I can’t find anything I like better than the KitchenAid for the looks, function and price. They also recently game out with a newer professional style line, but I haven’t checked it out. Good luck!
Thank you, Juliet!
