Choosing a window treatment for your kitchen can be a challenge. Whether it’s blinds, drapes, a valance or something in between, there are so many options available. If you aren’t sure where to start, it may be helpful to enlist the services of an interior designer. They can help translate your vision for you and help you to find the perfect window covering option for every room in your home, including your kitchen. And contrary to what you may think, using a designer can actually save you money, too, because they have pre-existing relationships with retailers, manufacturers and installers, which means they can likely get you a better price than you could if you were to buy directly from the store.
Before you go shopping, whether with a designer or on your own, it’s a good idea to do some preliminary research to see what kinds of options are available.
Choosing Window Treatments for your Kitchen Window
If you are concerned about privacy (such as if your kitchen faces a nearby neighbors house) you will want to choose a window covering that is opaque enough to keep onlookers eyes’ out. If privacy isn’t a concern (which it may not be in the kitchen) you can leave the window more open by using a more sheer window covering that will keep the space looking bright and airy.
Draperies and Blinds
Speaking of light, it’s important to consider the direction your window faces when choosing a window covering option. If the window faces to the south, you will get more light than a north-facing window will experience. What that means in terms of window coverings may vary depending on your family’s needs. Perhaps you want the room flooded with light in the morning to boost everyone’s mood and to provide lots of natural light for the tasks you need to accomplish in the kitchen. There may be times when you want to control the light a little more, however, such as during mealtimes. In those cases, it’s best to have the option to close the drapes or blinds.

If your windows are very large or strangely shaped, you can either have your window coverings custom fit to your window or you can opt for something like floor-length drapes or curtain panels, which can frame the window while adding drama. If you want the window to look dressed but not overdone, or if there is only a small amount of space around the window (such as one that is over the sink) considering dressing the window with a valance. You’ll give your windows that finished look without being overdone and without filling up the space too much.
Choosing the right window covering for any room in your house is like choosing the right accessories for your outfit. A room just isn’t finished without accessories like draperies, just as your outfit isn’t complete without the right jewellery, so don’t neglect this step. If you walk into a room and it doesn’t feel finished, check for touches like the draperies. If something feels missing, it’s probably that.
