I have designed many bedrooms for my clients and I have to say that I focus on their comfort as much as I focus on the design.
It wasn’t until recently that the science of sleep was proven. For several generations, it was believed that sleep was just a passive time spent in the dark. Although people knew that they required sleep, understood that they felt better after a good night’s sleep, they never really knew why they felt better after a good sleep. It was in the 1950’s that the reasons for which we need sleep and the science of sleep became understood.
Sleep is known to boost the immune system. For this reason, rest has always been the most recommended activity to recover from surgery and other illness. While the body sleeps, the immune system gets an opportunity to regulate your appetite, fight off the infection and make you feel better sooner.
Sleep also enhances memories as well as has a role in correlating connections between ideas, which actually seem unrelated. As sleep time is the period in which your brain focuses on the daily activities, this is the time when permanent memories are created. This is because, sleep gives a chance for the brain to consolidate all the memories in a way, which can be easily recalled later. Hence, when you wake up you can recollect your memories and see things that remind you of the past.
Here are some tips on make the most of your sleepy nights:
How Long Should I Sleep For?
Although we feel four hours of sleep is enough for us to survive, studies have shown that adults need at least seven hours of sleep every day. Children should sleep for about 16 hours a day and teens should get nine hours of sleep. Studies have also shown that, if a person consistently receives less than seven hours of sleep a day, then that person’s mood, cognitive skills and judgmental abilities will be affected. No one would like a grumpy co-worker who always has trouble in making decisions. So getting the recommended hours of sleep will not only keep you happier but will also keep the people around you happy.
More Sleep = a Healthier You!
Before alarms clocks were invented, people regulated their sleep depending on the rise and fall of the sun and moon. Everything changed with time and now people are suffering from sleep debts. This is the way in which your body notifies you are hurting it with a lack of beneficial sleep. If you deprive your body of sleep for several days, it increases the total hours of sleep that you should finally catch up with. When accumulated too much, sleep debt increases the chances of diabetes, heart diseases, obesity and stroke. Most of these disorders can be made up by getting enough sleep. Studies have shown that resolving sleep debt and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule will drastically improve the physical as well as the mental health.
You Look so Young!
To get rejuvenated and handle the daily stress, it is extremely important for your brain to receive the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. In general, brain should have four to five REM/non-REM cycles per night. Events such as wakefulness should be brief and occasional. Anything more than this should ideally be discussed with a health professional. Both, REM and non-REM are required to have a rejuvenating and restful night’s sleep. Your body will pass through different stages of sleep it needs, and also attains the required REM. Accumulating sleep debt will prevent this natural process and requires this process to be made up at a later point of time.
