Interior designer Becki Owens transformed a dark Tuscan-style kitchen into a bright white kitchen without breaking the client’s bank account and today I am sharing how she did it.
According to the designer, she wanted “(…) to create a fresh, bright and inviting gathering space. For that, she decided to give the kitchen an update with some clean new finishes and transform it
from a darker Tuscan feel to a light and larger feeling space.
The first step was to spray paint the existing dark cabinets with white semi-gloss lacquer with no pigment and then slowly bring some classic elements such as white marble countertop and backsplash. Modern lighting and new accessories was just the icing on the cake this kitchen needed to feel updated and elegant.
Take notes on this kitchen’s sources, pin the pictures for future reference, and make sure to take a look at Becki’s others projects here!
To transform the Tuscan kitchen into this bright white kitchen, the designer painted the wall in Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee eggshell sheen and cabinets in white lacquer, with no pigment in it, in semi-gloss sheen.
Kitchen Runner
This affordable wool kitchen runner lightens up the floor tiles and bring some fun to the floors.
Kitchen runner is Kite Wool Kilim Rug from West Elm – $19.99 (sale price).
Blue Roman Shade
A blue Roman shade brings softness and a touch of color to this white kitchen.
The fabric is a Schumacher blue linen and the faucet is by Rohl.
Kitchen Stools
The industrial kitchen stools are from Crate and Barrel.
Kitchen Island
The designer saved money by keeping the existent island and painting it in the same white as the perimeter cabinets. This allowed her to splurge a little and replace the brown granite countertop with Calcutta marble.
Flooring
If you look at the very 1st picture on this post, where you see the “Before” photo of this kitchen, you will notice that the Travertine floor tiles weren’t changed. Instead of changing the tiles, the designer had the grout cleaned and this made the tiles look much lighter than they used to.
This is a way to save big on a kitchen remodel!
Countertop, Backsplash & Hardware
The designer used Calcutta marble, 3″x 12″ subway tiles with white grout for the kitchen backsplash. For the island and counters she chose a 2″, honed Calcutta marble with a clean, mitered edge. Restoration Hardware pulls and knobs looks beautiful with the marble.
Kitchen Lighting
Kitchen lighting is Arteriors Reeves Antique Brass Large Pendant – $660 each.
The lighting is a small splurge but the antique brass is really an important addition to this space. It brings warmth and balances the flooring hue with the rest of the room.
West Elm sells a similar pendant for a more affordable price – West Elm Globe Pendant.
Kitchen Nook
Here’s what the designer had to say about the breakfast nook: “My goal with this space was to brighten it up, make the colors pop and show off the charming bench seating. I started by lightening up the area, painting all the surrounding walls. With the walls and all the trim painted white the gray accent color of the bench was highlighted.”
Wall Paint Color
Isn’t this breakfast nook perfect? Paint color is Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45.
Nook Lighting
The lighting in the breakfast nook is Arteriors Jarrod Large Pendant – $1,488.00
Nook table and chairs are from Restoration Hardware.
The Roman shades fabric is by John Robshaw.
Dining Room
I couldn’t resist and I had to share this stunning dining room that Becki designed for the same clients. Isn’t it beautiful? I love the chandelier and the serene color scheme.
Paint Color
Dining room paint color is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172.
