I am so happy to continue our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series and I’m honored to have Kelly from @bluegraygal with us today. I loved her Instagram page the moment I saw her home… what a fantastic place! She added personality to her renovated home with the help of her interior designer, Alicia Weaver Design, who transformed a dark kitchen into an inspiring space.
Here’s what Kelly has to say about her family and where they live:
“We are a young family of five in Atlanta, Georgia. We purchased this home when our daughter was three, and our identical twin boys were 5 weeks old! We did not build it. We moved in and immediately started making a lot of cosmetic changes, but no structural changes. We fell in love with the home because of the lot and layout of the home. It’s around 10,000 square feet yet is built for a family. It doesn’t have a “castle-like” feel at all. It’s warm, inviting and backs up to a National Forest so it’s private and has a bit of a mountain feel in the middle of the city!”
Let’s take a look at her gorgeous home. I know you will love it!

Meet Kelly!
This is Kelly from @bluegraygal in her gorgeous home!
More about the Living room: “The original space had empty cut ins to the left and right of the fireplace originally used to set furniture and mirrors. After living in the house for a few years, I finally decided I didn’t want furniture there. I wanted built-in’s that met the needs for how our family entertained. Custom cabinetry was designed to meet the needs of storing and displaying china and glassware, easy access to silver and entertaining pieces, doors that opened and slid back to allow for food or drink to be set out and most importantly, closed storage space at the top. I love to decorate for almost all holidays and I store the dining room holiday décor in the upper levels of the cabinetry”.
“We use the manzanita centerpiece in place of a chandelier. It’s a fun thing my children and I do each season together. Eventually a chandelier will be hung, but for now we enjoy the project of celebrating the seasons when we decorate it!”

Dining Room Cabinets
The dining room cabinets feature gold hardware and smoked mirror. Cabinetry was done by Dukeman Custom Woodworking. Paint Color is Sherwin Williams SW 6105 Divine White.
Custom Drawers
I was very careful to lay out all of my serving pieces and utensils on the floor and measure exactly how I wanted the drawers to be created. They were all custom made and each of the four drawers is unique inside to hold silverware, napkin rings, plate mats, etc. When it came down to choosing the lining, my designer thought for sure I would choose my signature gray velvet. But I surprised everyone with choosing red! Something about red made it feel like the Louboutin of the room – the sexy reveal when you opened the drawer. It felt decadent and surprising and I haven’t regretted it since!
Dining Room Paint Color
The wall paint color is Benjamin Moore 1485 Brushed Aluminum.
Table and chairs are from previous home: Stanley Furniture. Chairs covered in Robert Allen Pattern Savoy color Grotto, and Pattern: Inside Out, Color Topaz. We hope to update the chairs entirely one day.
Custom Buffet
“The buffet piece had to be custom made due to the scale. I had given my designer several ideas of what I envisioned. I wanted clean, transitional but not modern. She chose to paint the entire piece the exact same color of the wall (Brushed Aluminum) but in a different finish. We chose a granite counter top that looks like marble but allows me to set out food there without fear of anything staining. The entire effect of the room now is casual elegance. Believe it or not my family eats in here monthly! Our children know how to set the table and we love to use our wedding china and crystal to eat plain ol’ chicken and rice for dinner! Isn’t that what Wedding china should be for? To use and enjoy with your growing family?”
Lamp: Currey and Co.
Art: Trowbridge.
Hardware
The buffet hardware is from Emtek.
Living Room
“This room functions as the sitting room and is flooded with light. The room looks and feels different depending on where the sun is at that moment. It’s a very relaxing room and it’s where I prefer to sit and work. Our designer chose to paint the walls, ceiling and trim all in the exact same color to bring the ceiling down a little bit and make you feel enveloped in the blue and warmth of the space. We hope to update the furniture one day to be more oversized and snuggly!”

Kitchen
Changes: “We did not build this. When we bought it there were pine cabinets, silver backsplash and a lot of orange faux brick. We will eventually remodel it completely but to make it a bit more current on an affordable budget, we chose to stain the pine cabinets a dark ebony. We had the cabinetry built all the way up to the ceiling and added in a lighted display area to make it more current. The backsplash was changed to an ivory Walker Zanger material. No other construction changes were made.
Curious to see how this kitchen looked before?

Family Room
“This room had a very country feel when we purchased it. A lot of brown beams and stone fireplace. It was lovely, but I wanted to brighten and lighten. The shape of the beams didn’t seem to fit the rest of the design so my designer suggested we paint them to almost have them fade into the background and not stand out. Doing so made the entire room feel more open and bright and allowed the focal point of your eye to be on the furniture and fireplace”.

Master Bedroom
This is my favorite room in our home. I had asked our designer to create a hotel-type of feel in our Master. I wanted glamorous, a bit more handsome looking and something very cozy. She delivered. The silk drapery is so decadent and rich looking. The bed is custom upholstered in silk and the ivory nightstands provide a gorgeous counterbalance. She chose a bench for the end of the bed that’s very deep. Her thought was that as the kids got older they would come sit in the room and all snuggle on that bench while we talked. She was right – except usually they migrate from the bench to right in the middle of us very quickly!
