Here you will see her beautiful home and know all of the details about its interiors. I think you will get to admire this young mother of three as much you will love her house!
Hi! I’m Jen Green; I am a wife, mother of three (two sons, and a daughter) and a small business owner of Green Spruce Designs. Formerly a physical therapist, I’ve recently changed career paths to follow my passion for design.
Currently, I redesign vintage furniture and sell vintage home décor at Sweet Clover Barn, in Frederick, MD, and through my Facebook and Instagram pages. I’ve also recently had the amazing opportunity to work closely with an architect and custom builder to build our family’s dream home, and I am so excited to share it with you! Thank you so much to Luciane for inviting me to contribute to “Beautiful Homes of Instagram!” What an honor it is to be among so many of my very talented IG friends! I’ve loved following along and admiring the beautiful homes that have been featured in this series.
In 2004, my husband and I bought a 1946 Cape Cod home in Northern Virginia. We were pregnant with our first child at the time and were so excited to start a family. Ten years and three kids later, we had outgrown our little home and started the hunt for a larger house. We never found the right one to accommodate our family’s needs… We love our neighborhood and schools, so we decided to build on our lot. Being environmentally conscious, we chose to donate our home, instead of tearing down. We hired Second Chance in Baltimore, MD to deconstruct our home, salvaging its history and reusing its materials.
While deconstruction and permitting were taking place, I was finalizing home plans. I kept my builder abreast of my vision by sharing with him my many (thousands of) inspiration pics that I had collected from Pinterest and Houzz. My design esthetic is vintage, eclectic, modern farmhouse-ish. I grew up in Vermont, so there is also quite a bit of New England influence in my home design (beams, stacked stone, shake siding, soap stone, etc.).
We moved into our new home in January, 2015 and I’ve been slowly decorating ever since. I tend to shop small, thrift, and collect vintage décor so it takes time. There are also lots of “phase-two projects” left to do, like exterior shutters, landscaping, window treatments, backsplashes, basement build, etc. But, I’d love to share with you the progress we’ve made so far!

I wanted the two rooms in which we spend most of our time to be bright, open, and inviting. I designed the family room/kitchen space to share a central, double-sided fireplace, thus giving us walls of windows! This also enabled me to have a sectional that faces guests as they enter, which I find to be very inviting. My design plan for the kitchen/family room called for 11.3’ ceilings, and five matching 17’ beams, with two smaller beams for a mantle. This all looked great on architectural drawings, but bringing it to fruition was quite a feat. After months of searching, my picker was unsuccessful in finding beams of this length. I set off on a search at Vintage Lumber in Woodsboro, MD. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the hand hewn beams, of the length, and the quantity I needed. I left so disappointed. However, I was called back a week later, as the owner had literally stumbled upon some rare hand-hewn, American chestnut beams that he was unaware he had. I immediately drove out to Vintage Lumber to take a look. There they were- 7 hand-hewn beams, 17’ in length, and a couple smaller matching beams for the mantle. They were from an old barn in Baltimore County and they were headed straight to my home!
