Are you getting ready to embark on a new home improvement project? While a detailed product list and proposed budget are just some of the main priorities to consider before you get started, don’t forget about safety. Many injuries occur from simple things that could easily be prevented ahead of time during a home remodel. Here are a few reasons why safety should play an important part in the entire construction process, especially if you are doing a majority of the work on your own.
Have you started a project but it hasn’t been completed yet? Holes, exposed wiring, and unsecured flooring are all potential hazards that could harm someone else you bring in to finish the job who is not familiar with the changes. That’s why it’s important to create a safe work environment by highlighting and identifying risky areas. Some things to consider include:
It’s also important to post any work permits issued by the city or township that you live in. This will make it easy for contractors and inspectors to gather the proper information needed pertaining to your project.
Electrical power tools and saws are a must have when starting your home improvement project, but they can also be dangerous if they’re in the wrong hands. Children or helpers who may not be familiar with how they turn on or operate could hurt themselves if they come in contact with a saw or dangerous power tool. Keep guards on your saws at all times when they are shut down and lock down your tools when they’re not in use. Not only does this protect against unwanted theft, it will keep people safe in the process. You can also protect your tools by making sure that you have access to the proper electrical outlets. Always use GFCI outlets to plug in power equipment. This will help to prevent an electrical shock in the event the cord or equipment comes in contact with water or flammable liquids.
While sharp objects such as tools and construction supplies are dangerous if not handled safely, dull tools can be just as risky to use. Before embarking on your project, make sure that you are using sharp blades or new blades that fit your saw or cutting tool properly. This is because a dull blade can actually pull and tug at wood or metal and cause the blade to snap or break off. The added stress can also cause the tool to make the surfaces that it’s cutting on weak and unstable. This could lead to the wood or surface slipping away from your grip and causing injury. Always use a flat, sturdy area to properly use your sharp tools. This will make it easier to maneuver while you measure and cut appropriately.
Are you trying to tackle a large-scale project with little to no help? Are you a licensed contractor? Or are you trying out a new project with little to no experience? For bigger jobs, it’s better to call in the pros. Here are some examples of when you should ask for some assistance:
Even if you’ve completed a lot of these projects in the past, doing the work by yourself can pose a safety concern. Ask a contractor or building company to complete more advanced or technical construction jobs. Most contractors are licensed and insured to protect themselves and you against any liability should an accident or mishap occur.
Taking several small things into consideration when it comes to planning your home improvement project will make things that much easier. Always think safety first before embarking on any construction job.
