For those homeowners who have a garage, you know that over time the room eventually starts to get cluttered. We put things in there for storage, and as time goes on it all starts to build up. On top of that, we don’t spend a lot of time in the garage, so we don’t pay much attention to where and how we are storing things. If your garage has gotten too far out of control, and you finally want to do something about it, here are a few steps you can follow to give your garage an upgrade and get it back in order.
As I said, there are probably a lot of things in your garage at the moment. Chances are you don’t need all of them. Garages are prime places to gather all of our unwanted stuff, since we don’t know where else to put it. Your first task should be to go through everything and find out what you actually need to keep. For the rest, put it into two piles – things you are going to throw away, and things you are going to give away. The more stuff you can clear out, the easier it will be to get your garage in order.
Now that you only have stuff left that you need, you need to store it in a way that is organized. For this, you’re going to need some storage materials. To start off, get yourself some basic storage tubs. These are great for holding loose items that you don’t need frequently, and you can even stack them on top of one another to give yourself more space.
After that, consider adding some shelving or cabinets to your garage. Your garage likely has a lot of wall space going unused, so make the most of it by either installing some shelves and cabinets, or putting up some free-standing shelves along them. You can find plastic shelving for a reasonable price, and you’d be amazed at how much you can fit on it.
Finally, if you have a lot of tools lying around, a great way to store them is with a pegboard. By installing a pegboard on one of the walls, you can use pegs to hold up all of your tools. This gives you an easy way to access and find them, along with a way to store them that doesn’t take up much space.
Even if you were able to get rid of a lot of stuff, and find a place to store the rest, you may still have more stuff in your garage than you’d like. If this is the case, consider finding another location to store some things in. For instance, you could move some stuff to your basement, a storage locker, or get yourself a 10’x15’ arrow shed for your yard. Think about which items need to be in the garage, and which ones can be moved elsewhere. You can then keep these things safe, but not have to worry about them cluttering up your garage.

As you’re organizing your garage, try to label everything as much as you can. This will make it easier to find things in the future, and help you to put things back after you are done with them. A label maker is great for this, but you can just as easily grab some masking tape and a marker. Consider labeling all of the tubs you put things in, along with what you have in each cabinet or set of drawers.

Finally, with your garage cleaned out, and everything in an organized place, now you just need to maintain this new system. You don’t want to be cleaning out your garage again in a couple of months, and have all of your hard work wasted. Only put things in your garage if they belong there, and always put things back where they belong. Every few weeks take a few minutes to go through your garage and see what you can clean up. It’s better to do a little bit at a time, rather than having to devote another weekend towards a complete overhaul.
If you can do all of the things mentioned above, you should find that your garage is better organized, and will continue to stay that way going forward. All it takes is some time and some discipline, and you can transform your garage into a room you are proud of – or at least one that doesn’t drive you crazy.
