When the couple, Kathleen and Martin, parents of two preschool children, outgrew their Maplewood, NJ home, they decided to build the house of their dreams on a piece of property in New Providence, NJ. They hired architect Bob Miller a principle with Miller & Wright Architects, based in NY. He envisioned a modern farmhouse, which the couple loved for its open design. Miller was responsible for the first phase of design and his main ideas and concepts launched the home. Sadly, the 48-year-old architect passed away suddenly from complications related to melanoma. His partner Doug Wright took over the final phase of the project and has since renamed the firm Douglas C. Wright Architects.
The interior designer, Heidi Piron’s interpretation of the modern farmhouse is in the juxtaposition of metals—polished nickel, hot rolled steel, stainless appliances—with more casual, tactile materials. This is represented in the farmhouse plank cabinetry —a grain relief in warm yellow tones mixed with modern, integrated polished nickel pulls. It is also evident in the hot rolled steel glass cabinets, the durable, low-maintenance leathered gray Quartz countertops and handmade, glazed terracotta tile from Mosaic House.

The challenge of this custom kitchen cabinetry design was that the door has 4-inch wide planks and each cabinet needed to be designed in multiples of four inches. It required thoughtful planning so that they lined up on the horizontal and vertical planes. As a result, there is a beautiful enveloping symmetry to the cabinetry.

The Mosaic House tile has a “non-perfect” feel to them when installed — an effect that Piron loves. Since they are hand glazed, each piece has slightly different color, they have a soft, watercolor feel to them.
In her quest to create visual sight lines in this kitchen, Piron suggested placing the range and vent hood in front of the windows, instead of the sink. The homeowners loved the idea and it also then allowed for two ovens, and all-refrigerator and main sink to be close at hand. As it turned out, it was later discovered that Bob Miller originally had the range situated in front of the window in his preliminary floor plan but this detail was lost in the aftermath of Bob’s death. “I was never aware of this detail until we landed on the same design choice,” says Heidi. “The fact that Bob Miller’s design ideas for the home were realized was personally very meaningful to me.”

This layout allowed the homeowners to create a beverage area on the other side of the kitchen, which includes a prep sink, a microwave drawer, steam oven and under counter refrigerator. Family and friends can access the kitchen without getting in the way of the cook. Since the couple both work, the steam oven helps them to reheat food quickly and since Kathleen loves to bake, the steam oven is useful for a day of heavy baking. “Most people don’t realize that a steam oven can do everything a regular oven can,” says Piron. “It can accommodate standard size cookie sheets or just as easily, roast a chicken.”

Since Piron swapped out the standard wall oven for steam, she was also able to add a built-in Miele coffeemaker, which was the one appliance Martin requested for the kitchen. Piron adds, “The range in front of the window is what makes this kitchen so unique but Martin’s coffee maker is right up there. It makes an amazing cup of coffee!”
