Creating a haven for wildlife doesn’t mean letting your garden grow into an ominous jungle. You can still enjoy a perfectly neat and tidy garden space and still encourage wildlife to visit. Whether you have a large country garden, a busy mixture of grass and decking that the whole family enjoys on sunny days or a little balcony in a block of flats. There are so many wonderful ways you can bring wildlife a little closer.
All creatures great and small need different types of homes. Some areas of your garden you might not even consider to be habitats! There are lots of ways we can let nature make a home in the smallest of gardens as well as the largest, here are a few examples.
Whether your garden has an impressive apple tree or boasts large Evergreen Trees from The Tree Center along its boarders, trees and hedges are great for wildlife in the way that they provide somewhere for birds to nest and small mammals to live as well as shelter from the cold winter and shade in the hot summer. They also prove helpful when avoiding predators, so if your garden is a great place for wildlife to shelter and feel safe, you’ll soon attract plenty of different kinds.
Yes! Your lawn is a habitat too! Lawns – or slightly overgrown patches of grass are the perfect haven for minibeasts and insects to thrive. As well as providing a feasting ground for birds to visit and feed their young.
It goes without saying that water plays host to so many different species. Ponds are perfect places for amphibians and fish to thrive, as well as invertebrates. If having a pond makes you feel a little uneasy (especially if you have young children) then consider something like a bird bath, where small birds can come and bathe, drink and cool off. Even little water features will be a great addition.
All animals need shelter and a place to raise their young. If they have a successful year then chances are that they’ll return the following year too!
There’s nothing wrong with giving nature a helping hand and providing artificial homes is simple, low impact way of doing just that! If your garden is lacking in trees and bushes then somewhere safe like a box is ideal.
If you have any old wood hanging around then don’t burn it or take it to the tip. Find a place that you can keep it and allow it to become a haven for minibeasts big and small. As well as a few spiders!
Here are a few ways you can provide a smorgasbord for wildlife throughout the year.
⦁ Plant nectar rich flowers
⦁ Berry bushes and flowering trees
⦁ Provide a clean, safe place for water – this is just as important as a food source!
