Hello my wonderful friends! I hope you are being able to relax during this Christmas break and are ready to daydream and learn a few things with this new “Beautiful Homes of Instagram”.
It’s truly wonderful to have Brooke and her husband, Henry Jones, of @plankandpillow on the blog. You might remember seeing their home recently featured on Home Bunch‘s 2018 Fall Decorating Ideas post and if you’re planning on building a modern farmhouse-style home, this post should be very helpful. Also, make sure to read their blog “Plank and Pillow” where they explain more details about their newly-built home and share many inspiring DIYs.
Here, Brooke explain more about their gorgeous modern farmhouse:
“We custom built this modern farmhouse on 5.7 acres in the small town of Kingsport, TN. It is a customized version of the Mama Crovatt’s plan by Southern Living. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, and 3 half baths. The plan had the farmhouse look we were looking for, and we gave it a modern edge by incorporating things like black windows, lots of white, industrial lighting, and metal railing. When it comes to our style, we like to keep things simple. Less is more.”
This is one of my favorites modern farmhouse exteriors I have seen in a while and I really hope you enjoy this house tour, pin and share it with your family and friends. This home is truly full of beautiful ideas and I am very proud to be sharing with all of you today. 🙂
Windows are black aluminum clad from Plygem.
The front door and back porch door are mahogany with a clear coat of polyurethane.
“For the porch decking we were originally going with an engineered material. But when it arrived on site, we could see that it had too much of an artificial look. So we opted for plain ole pressure treated decking, which ended up being much cheaper. We finished with Cabot Gold, which gave it an almost interior hardwood look.”
Doors: Alexandria Mahogany from DSA Doors.

“Building a house is all about saving money where you can. To get our windows pre-finished in black on the inside, it was going to cost a fortune. So instead, we got them in unfinished wood, and painted them black. You honestly can’t tell they didn’t come that way. In this picture, they are right beside the back porch door, which is something we definitely did not save money on. You have to save in some areas so you can splurge in others.”
Window paint color is Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black – Satin Finish.
We went with a simple black industrial metal railing. We love the clean modern lines it creates in this space, and it goes perfectly with the windows and lighting. And the best part is that it was more affordable than traditional wood railing.
Railing: black metal made by Appalachian Iron Works (local company).
Stair Lighting: Black Industrial Wall Sconce.

“One of the challenges we encountered when building was finding a stain for our stair treads that matched the color of our engineered hardwood. I can’t even count the number of color combinations we tried. We were about to give up when we came across an outdoor semi-transparent stain that was a perfect match. We never even considered looking at the outdoor stains. I guess sometimes you have to think a little outside the box.”

We had planned on doing the entire house in board and batten, but after our guys finished this front part of our house, we saw how labor intensive it was. So to speed things up and save some money, we decided to alternate between board and batten and lap siding on the different sections of the house. Lap goes up so much quicker. I’m actually so glad we decided to go this route. I think the variation adds a lot of visual interest.
Brick: Aztec from General Shale.
Here’s a look at the back of our house. We just recently finished some landscaping and a DIY concrete fire pit behind the pool retaining wall. If you squint your eyes you might be able to make it out. 😀 Now we need to build some steps coming off the right side of the wall. There is already a gate in the fence at that corner. Looking forward to having these because it help hide the lovely pool equipment.
The pool area is tucked away between the garage and the house, which gives us lots of privacy. To add more “modern”, we decided on a simple rectangular shape. It’s surrounded by 2′ x 2′ travertine tiles and then pavers for walking area and a place to put our outdoor dining area.
