Sometimes we can feel really discouraged with our current home because we can’t envision its potential. If this is your case, or if you’re about to buy a fixer upper, this “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” should really inspire you today. Michelle completely transformed her 80’s home into a dream home. Honestly, looking at these pictures you can’t believe this is not a new home. Start getting inspired and I might warn you… make sure to hold your jaw because it might fall at any time! 🙂
Hi everyone! My name is Michelle of @blushingboho. I am so honored to have my home and designs featured in Luciane’s Beautiful Homes of Instagram series here on Home Bunch!
My husband and I purchased this home in the Spring of 2017. Prior to moving, we lived in a 580 square foot apartment for many years. As much as we truly did love living in such a small space, we wanted to be able to entertain more, and as a designer, I wanted a place to put my personal stamp on. My husband and I have done almost all of the renovations ourselves, with some help from family and friends. When we purchased the home, it was structurally in good shape, but having been built in 1981, it needed some major cosmetic updates throughout. While our new home is 1500 square feet and technically not considered a large home, it feels very spacious to us, and has kept us busy with renovations for the past two years!
From a very young age, I was always very interested in interiors, DIY, and really anything creative. I remember watching “This Old House” on tv every Saturday morning, and still watch it to this day. When we were looking to purchase our first home I knew I only wanted a fixer upper. I have a very specific style, and I wanted to learn how to renovate a home myself to achieve the look I was envisioning. Over the past two years I have learned so much about what goes into building a home, and have developed a love for woodworking and the skill and precision it takes in order to make a project look professional. My husband and I have done all of the renovations in this home ourselves, with the exception of our staircase remodel and some plumbing reconfigurations. At the start of our renovation, the only home project we’d done before was painting. My Dad taught us how to install the wood flooring, as well as allowed us to borrow any tool we needed from his extensive collection. We started out with smaller projects, referencing my Dad, Youtube, blogs, and This Old House, and have slowly worked our way up to more complicated projects. In the photos below I will recap some of the changes we’ve made to the home to bring it to where it is today. Thanks so much for reading!
I am sure you guys will love Michelle’s home as much as I do! This is a new approach on coastal interiors – it feels fresh, reinvented yet timeless.

We completely renovated the staircase, continuing the wood flooring up the stairs and adding in the wrought iron spindles to tie in with the bronze windows and bring in more contrast to the space. The second set of stairs originally did not have spindles, and was a drywalled half wall, so we took that out and added in spindles to allow more light into the stairwell.

We recently replaced the fireplace tile surround and hearth and added some vertical tongue and groove above the mantle to draw the eye up as we have eight foot ceilings throughout the home.

This room had some serious moisture issues with the previous slider door being installed incorrectly. Water would actually flow down from the top of the doors like a waterfall whenever we got any heavy rain! We did a temporary fix upon moving in, and later purchased all new Renewal by Andersen windows and doors in the bronze color with grilles for the entire home, which added in some contrast and drama to the all white walls and light wood flooring. I also added in the shiplap accent wall to pull in some dimension as I have a more minimal approach when it comes to wall art.

This is our downstairs half bathroom, and the space that has had the biggest transformation in our home! Originally the vanity spanned the entire back wall of the space, and the toilet was placed awkwardly in the corner, making the room very hard to navigate. We gutted the space, and moved the toilet to the back wall. We added in the wainscoting and dark wall color to play up that fact that this room gets very little natural light.

This hallway is one of my favorite transformations in the home. Previously there was a view of the half wall going up the second staircase and part of the hallway, which is now wrought iron spindles.

I also took of the tiny accordion door for the linen closet and built this custom barn door to make that space more of a novelty and focal point rather than the eye sore it used to be. This is the first thing I see when I open my bedroom door in the morning, and I reflect on how far we’ve come every time I see this view.

This is our guest bathroom that’s located off of the upstairs hallway. This is another room that had an overly generous sized vanity that didn’t leave enough space near the toilet. We took that out and replaced it with a smaller vanity. The vanity in this bathroom and the downstairs half bath are the same style that I’ve painted and added new pulls to. The previous homeowners had recently renovated the master bathroom, and decided to install these two single vanities next to one another instead of a double vanity. I opted to purchase a double vanity for the master bath, but still made use of the two single vanities in our other two bathrooms.

This master bathroom is one of our most recent project’s we’ve completed. This was the only room that had been renovated in the home, so we worked with what was currently there. The previous home owners had redone the tile flooring and used the same tile for the shower area as well. It’s a varied light grey tile in about a 12×24” size, which works as a nice neutral base for the room.
I painted everything white and brought in more dimension with the shiplap wall, and changed out the overhead vanity light for three sconces surrounding the arched brass mirrors. I swapped a two single vanities for this white double vanity with a marble top for a more elegant look.
