When your babies start to grow and you start thinking about turning that backyard of yours into a magical place where they can run around and make memories, there are some standard things that you can add like a swing set or sandbox. We aren’t saying these items aren’t fun or they shouldn’t be added but there are some unique ideas we found on the internet that might take your backyard playground from typical into exceptional.
Some of the ideas we’ve listed below will take some ingenuity and a little elbow grease, or a lot. It all depends on what you are comfortable with. Before you take on any project it is important to educate yourself with research. Make sure you have the right tools and a friend if needed.

The most important step to creating a workable playground in your backyard is to plan it out. Get the tape measure and create a map of your backyard. Know what your plan on doing and what type of entertainment you want to feature in your yard, research the standard sizes, like a swing set, and make sure that the things you want will fit into your yard.
While you are making this map, you should consider the fact that grass and weeds will grow even in the tiniest of spaces. So, you want to make sure you leave room for mowing or enough space for an electric weed eater. It’s best to get weeds right at the source so try to remove them before you place your sandbox down.

Well, you don’t need a lion but if you have an elaborate garden or landscape in your yard then you can carve out some paths that will make your children and their neighborhood friends. If you have a large yard, and the means to do some planting then start researching how to create a garden with a path. There are few things more fun to children then secret hiding places and adventures.

Swing sets with built in slides are great but, if you can’t do this, there is no reason why your child should miss out on having a swing in the backyard. One of the most essential items for this playground activity would be a tree. If you don’t have a tree or a swing set then there is little you can do to put a swing in the backyard.
Although, swinging is great fun for children of all ages, even adults. If you have the means consider putting a set in your yard if you don’t have a tree. You can remove one of the swings and attach a tire swing instead. There are plenty of used sets on the market but be sure to check it out thoroughly.
How-To
To hang a tire swing all you need is some rope, a tire, a tree (or swing set), a ladder, a tape measure, and a friend. It’s always a good idea to have someone spot you when you are climbing on a ladder. When choosing a tree, make sure it’s sturdy and the branch you decide on is in a good spot for ample swinging space. The limb should be strong and not too bouncy.
If you’re not that keen on a tire swing then there are all types of swings available that can be hung from a tree. Bench swings are a great addition to any yard and are more comfortable than tire swings, which can be great for the adults.

Section off a part of the fence then secure a chalkboard to it. You can surround the area with benches and colorful chairs. If you want you can build a small deck and keep toys and buckets of chalk here. It should be a good chalkboard that could be cleaned easily with water. This can give your children a creative outlet and will add to the quaintness of your yard.

This can be the centerpiece of your backyard playground. There are tons of instructions available on the internet. If they seem too challenging, there are kits available for sale. This too might seem like a bit too much so you could just put a tent in the middle of the yard.
When you feel up to it you can have sleepovers in the yard, when the weather permits. As your children grow up, you can let them have a friend sleep over while you keep an eye on them from the kitchen. These are the types of experiences great childhood memories are made of.

If you have a fence that is tall enough you can build a small rock climbing wall just like the synthetic ones found at some inside facilities. Of course, you don’t want to make it too high and safety is always top priority, so using a mattress or adding a small wooden deck with a futon underneath would help in case one of the children were to fall.

There are tons of ideas on how to take a humdrum yard and turn it into the playground of a lifetime. Your kids will love you for it and you’ll find that their creativity will burst at the seams, which will benefit their developing brains.
