How wonderful it is to start this new week with you here on Home Bunch! I hope we’re all ready for a good start to the week and that November brings us plenty of beautiful memories. I am so glad to start today with a dreamy “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” tour. I honestly know that I don’t even need to ask you to follow Stefana of @stefanasilber on Instagram because I already know that you will. Just read the details she shared about her home and you will see how talented she is. Can you believe that she even builds the cabinetry for her home? That’s a true DIYer, my friends! Oh, and be ready to see some inspiring Christmas decor ideas! I know you will love this house tour as much as I do!
“Hello everyone! My name is Stefana and you can find me daily on IG @stefanasilber sharing my passion for everything home decor, design, renovation, and DIY.
My husband and I bought our home over 7 years ago and have been slowly renovating it one room at a time. We have three children who are now older (9, 13, 15) which makes tackling home projects much easier than it used to be when they were little.
Our house is a traditional brick colonial in a formerly very rural area of Maryland that has recently become more of a suburb of Baltimore. Our house was built in the late 90s and it came with the typical tile and cabinetry of that time but with very good bones. My goal when remodeling and renovating is to stay faithful to the architecture and style of the house and to choose finishes that are contemporary yet classic that will endure the test of time.
I have expensive tastes but unfortunately not the budget to always get my top choice. I believe in compromise and in mixing low and high price point items to achieve the designer look I love so much. Almost all of the items in our renovations are retail even though many of them look custom made. I love sharing how to achieve the high end look on a budget, what to save on, what’s worth a splurge, and how to DIY a lot of the projects in our home.”
“We replaced the front door with retail available door from Thermatru and ordered through 84Lumber. The color is the standard black factory painted option on the inside and white on the outside.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“I installed the trim in our hallway which carries up the steps and all around the upstairs hallway. It’s made up of primed pine 1×4 planks and a small baseboard molding on the inside of each box. Because our house has traditional architecture, the molding needed to be a little more ornate than the square craftsman style in order to fit with the overall style better.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“The same wall molding carries into the dining room – also a DIY by yours truly – but this time at a 2/3 height from the floor. Our ceilings are 9ft tall on the main level and when deciding molding height, I recommend installing at 1/3 or 2/3 of the total wall height following the golden rule of thirds in design and architecture.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“The cane buffet you see in my dining room may look familiar because it was modeled after this designer piece but it’s also a DIY and probably one of my most popular ones. I consider my dining room the space in our house that looks most high but was achieved with low cost items from retailers like Amazon and World Market. It’s also a great example of mixing minimal modern style with vintage accessories which the big designers do so well. ” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“Our first large renovation was the kitchen remodel three years ago. I had done one kitchen remodel in our previous home and had chosen dark stained cabinets at the time which I quickly regretted. I had been pining after an all white kitchen for years and even though I was aware that all white kitchens were on their way out, I was going to have one in my life, come what may.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber
Kitchen: White Subway Tile – Home Depot.
Accent Tile: Marble Basketweave Tile – similar.
Runner: Joss & Main.
“I went with natural Carrara Marble countertop. After a lot of research and agonizing over that decision, I decided that marble is the only surface I wanted in my kitchen and I fully embraced its shortcomings. There’s nothing you can do to maintain or protect against etching, scratching, or staining. You have to have the mindset to either embrace it and love the patina, or go with a different surface.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“I had also fallen in love with inset style cabinetry – that’s when then the cabinet door sits on the inside of the frame instead of on top which is known as overlay. Inset style cabinets are typically custom made and many times more than the cost of standard cabinets. I was able to find a manufacturer that carries an inset line of cabinetry as part of their semi-custom offering.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber
Kitchen Cabinets: Decora Cabinetry White, Prescott Maple Inset Cabinets in manufacturer White.
“Have you heard of the “If you give a mouse cookie story…?” One thing leads to the next and all of a sudden you find yourself pulling up the fireplace molding on a Monday afternoon. That’s what happened to me once our kitchen renovation was finished. I would look onto the living room and dislike how much it didn’t fit the new and shiny kitchen in our open concept plan. So I set out to update the fireplace surround and the next natural step was to build floor to ceiling bookcases from scratch, all by myself. ” – Stefana from @stefanasilber
I already had experience installing wall molding but had never built a cabinet. After a lot of research and video watching I was able to achieve a professional looking result. My goal when I DIY is for the end product to look like a professional did it, not an inexperienced DIYer.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“My husband wanted a bar area but we didn’t have the room to create a traditional style bar with stools space. So we went for a kitchenette style but utilize it for the storage and serving of adult beverages. The black cabinets tie in with the adjacent media room but are softened with the warm tone of the natural wood floating shelves and the perfectly imperfect handmade Zellige tile backsplash.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

I envisioned a dark moody space for the media room. I wanted to challenge myself outside of my comfort zone of all white walls and found myself in the exact opposite extreme – black walls AND ceiling. The dark paint color combined with the deep leather sofas creates the moody clubby vibe I was going for. ” – Stefana from @stefanasilber

“Our patio is thermal sawn bluestone laid in random geometric pattern. This type of natural stone installation was done on previously poured concrete pad and set in mortar with mortar joint lines. Even though cement pavers are a very popular and economic way to go, I’m always a proponent of natural materials. Blue stone and red brick are a classic combination. In addition, wet laying the stones with mortar joint lines ensures that no weeds will ever break through that patio. It’s a more expensive and labor intensive process that requires an experienced stone mason to do well.” – Stefana from @stefanasilber
