Hello, my dear friends! I hope your day is going well and that you are feeling healthy. Today, I have the pleasure to share a new “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” tour filled with inspiring – but not overwhelming – Fall decor. Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory has prepared a stunning tour of her home and I really hope you have a wonderful time seeing it here and give her a follow on Instagram! You will love her feed!
“Hi, I am Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory, and am beyond honored that Luciane asked me to share my home and decorating style with you on Home Bunch. I have been following Luciane for years. From when my husband and I were renovating our last home to us designing the build of our current home. I still refer to Home Bunch daily for inspiration and to view all the gorgeous homes out there. Luciane has done an amazing job creating a space for individuals to find inspiration and sources. I am still in disbelief that she asked me to share our home with you today.
Before I tour our home with you, I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself. I grew up in the Midwest for most of my life, but when I was little, we lived by the ocean. I fell in love with everything – the ocean, the palm trees, the atmosphere and the list keeps going. I have always wanted to move back at some point. In the early part of my career, I met my husband and we decided to make the Midwest our home as we grew our family. We wanted a large yard for our three (soon to be four) kids to run and play. It was our number one factor when determining where we wanted to build. Once we found the land, it was about design. I knew I wanted a coastal vibe that let us feel like we were by the ocean even when we were not.”
“Welcome to our Home! They always say home appeal starts with the exterior. My husband and I wanted something that felt casual and coastal but also inviting. We searched online for years. We kept coming back to the bungalow look and feel. We picked a corner lot and wanted to keep privacy, which is often lost with a corner lot. To achieve privacy, we went with a floor plan that gives a “J” layout. This allowed for the house to wrap around the corner and provide backyard privacy. It was also perfect for keeping our outdoor kitchen area cool during the hot, humid months and provide shade in the afternoon while the kids play in the pool.” – Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory

“When you walk into our home, I wanted to showcase different architecture that made the place feel welcoming and warm but keep to the cool, white colors to give a sense of the coast. We did this by adding different textures and designs. One of my favorites is the Chippendale design on the railing. We added a touch of the ocean by doing a custom oyster shell chandelier.” – Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory

“We spend most of our time in and around the kitchen so we knew we needed to pay a lot of attention to detail in this space. My husband and I love to cook so having a large island where kids could sit and help us prep and prepare food, was a must. We designed a 10.5′ x 5.5′ island with storage on both sides with plenty of room to still sit and relax. Another must-have was a large gas grill with a pot filler. There is always a debate about whether people like them or not, but it is a must with all the pasta and soups we make. We also use it to fill our coffee pot every day and water bottles so it gets plenty of use.” – Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory

“Although I would love to have more than one washer and dryer, it did not make sense with us being on septic so I stuck to designing what I needed, space for the kids’ laundry. I made sure there was a basket for each kid to empty and sort their laundry. We also designed cabinets to the ceiling to allow for extra storage and less dusting for me. I hate to dust so all cabinets go to the ceiling in this house. ” – Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory

“My biggest tip for a mud room is storage…there is never enough storage so always make sure to plan extra. I wanted multiple types of storage. I kept the bottom open so kids could push their shoes under the bench and have easy access to hats and mittens in the drawers. Up top, we use the baskets for extra hats, mittens, and scarves. Above the baskets, I wanted space to be closed off so I could store anything, and if it was messy, no one would know. 😉 I also made space to include a “junk” drawer and doors to hold all the random items needed for the house like batteries and Command strips.” – Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory

“We knew we wanted an outdoor kitchen of some sort but decided to add this after the build. We started building after our first year in the house. It gave us time to figure out what we might want/need or what might not be necessary. We realized the outdoor fridge, grill, and pizza oven were the most important. After that, it was about storage – extra storage for outdoor toys. Can never have enough of that with kids, right?” – Michelle Horst of @thymeandtheory
