Good things usually come naturally to our lives and this is how I feel about today’s “Beautiful Homes of Instagram“. I first found out about Hollie Milne from @artfulhomestead when she tagged me on Instagram and I immediately loved her place, but I had no idea this is a former “HGTV Dream Home”. I just loved how she embraced every space and especially how she designed the entire home with her family members in mind. Read more about her home, her story, and you will see why I couldn’t help but invite her to be part of this series.
“We own the HGTV Dream Home 2012 and no we didn’t win it! The winner opted to take the money and we bought it. I call it the home that HGTV started because right after we moved in I went to work on the addition.
Why, you may ask? Because I wanted a home where my 5 children and their families could come to bond and be together as a family. It is located right outside of Park City in a little town called Midway Village. Our town is so small we don’t even have a stop light, but that’s what makes it special.
I immediately got started by designing the addition, looking for a contractor and finding products. The family kitchen was built with a 20’ table and 20’ island. I wanted all 31 of us to be able to sit and eat together. The table accommodates 22 and the island 10. We also needed to sleep everyone so 3 more guest suites and two bunk rooms were added to the plans. The other room I wanted was a studio for designing and quilting. I wanted it to be attached to the home but not accessible from the home so I added it to the other side of the garage and designed it like a ‘pied a terre’ in Paris. It has a kitchenette, 4 piece bathroom and the sofa has a pull out bed.
When the building started it wasn’t long before I realized I needed to be on the job site daily. I became the contractor, designer and site manager. Luckily I had the main house to stay in and I would go home to Southern California on the weekends where my husband was still working. The addition was finished in June of 2014 and it has become our forever home.
A little bit about me… I always lived in big cities. I grew up in Philadelphia. My husband is Canadian and we have lived in Chicago, Denver, Calgary, and Southern California. We raised 5 children and have 19 grandchildren. My husband retired in the fall of 2015 and we live here full time although I think I have at least one more remodel in me because we would like to have a 2nd home back In California to escape the cold of Utah. I always need to be learning new things and look for opportunities to be creative so I’m sure there is much in the horizon to still explore and become.”
