Home furnishing trends may come and go, but rustic design motifs have a popularity that never seems to go away. From impressive stone clad fireplaces to beautifully repurposed wooden furniture, this countrified yet uncomplicated style can transform the interior of any home.
However, dark colors and muted tones threaten to make a living room, kitchen, dining area, bedroom or bathroom look weary and lifeless. But with some minor alterations and adjustments, which include a little reorganisation, introducing more light and changing minor furnishings such as duvet covers, even the most rustic looking lodging can be alluring and inviting.
Rearrange your Furniture
You have probably had the same interior layout for quite some time, but by simply rearranging and moving around pieces of furniture, the room’s entire look and feel can be entirely different.
Either take every piece of furniture away from the room and start from scratch or download some interior design software. Think about creating a reading corner or entertainment area by grouping similar items of furniture together. Alternatively, have a focal point such as a fireplace or window to make any space more appealing.
Inject More Light
As well as brightening up any room, light can also make small and confined spaces feel much bigger. Wherever possible, try to introduce as much natural light as possible and avoid placing furniture in front of windows or doors.
Although rustic and rural color schemes look great, they tend to be quite dark and undefined. But by adding some additional light sources, you can draw attention to specific pieces of furniture and brighten up an interior space while retaining that pastoral yet plain look.
Update Small Furnishings
The majority of homes that favor rustic aesthetics have scores of beautiful wooden furniture and fittings. These items obviously need to be retained, but by focusing on the minor details of a property, you can maintain and rejuvenate a natural appearance.
Everything from pillowcases and duvet covers to rugs and throws can be updated to create an invigorating interior. These alterations don’t have to be very expensive either and can be constantly changed in order to keep your home looking fresh.
While the natural materials of most rustic interiors can be quite dark and gloomy, this doesn’t mean to say your home has to portray the same characteristics. By paying close attention to a room’s layout, the amount of light coming in and those small yet consequential furnishings, any rustic design motifs can shine brightly.

Talking about brightening up interiors, I am very happy that we’re taking the time to paint our main rooms in a neutral, soft gray color (Useful Gray by Sherwin Williams) and I am hoping this will help sell our house faster. I am also readjusting the decor around our house to work better with our new color. I have changed the bedding in our bedroom and my next step is adding some new pillows around the house.
The funny thing is that my husband – a person who is never into anything related to interiors or home improvement projects – is getting really into this redecorating phase we are. He’s getting excited about every new change and even giving me some interesting ideas… see, if you have a partner who always complains about any money you spend on home decor, try to get him involved on the project and that might help him see how fun it can be to prettify your home. If my husband did, there’s hope out there, people! 🙂
