Every home comes with a story and there’s plenty of stories to be said about this 1960’s cedar shingle colonial beach house. The designer Linda Banks, from Linda Banks of Banks Design Associates and Simply Home, starts by explaining that this entire house was a rabbit warren of tiny rooms and her objective was to open it up to expose the views of Casco Bay and access the outdoor living areas. The homeowners, a young couple with two small children from New York City, purchased an older beach house in Maine thinking of doing some minor repairs but a problem with frozen pipes during the winter lead to a major renovation, which served as a white canvas for the designer to create each space with more freedom.
Despite the first troubles this property had, the homeowners knew they were in good hands to make the best of this home and to finally take full advantage of the stunning views of the Maine’s coastline.
Here are the details:
The front door is from Simpson Door Company, single raised panel painted red. The red door paint color is Benjamin Moore HC-181 Heritage Red. Side lights are seeded glass.
The vintage exterior lanterns are from Paris, wired by the architect. The designer purchased the French lanterns from one of her favorite purveyors of vintage French items; “Tuesdays on The Boulevard” in Virginia.
According to the designer, this space was a breezeway that was enclosed by the previous owners between the garage and the house. The designer added the interior wood mouldings on the interior to create and define the new front foyer as architecturally significant and relocated the interior door to the garage to the back. Paneling is plywood with applied astragal moulding every 9” on center, painted in Benjamin Moore Decorator White. The mural inspired the home’s color palette.
Foyer bench is vintage. The retro whimsical mural in the foyer is also from “Tuesdays on The Boulevard” .
Red chairs come to bring some color to this dining area. Wall paint color is Benjamin Moore OC-30 Gray Mist. Ceiling paint color is Benjamin Moore Super Spec White ceiling paint.
Red, the homeowner’s favorite color, is brought to the kitchen through the rattan French bistro barstools and pendants. Red pendants are Rejuvenation McCoy, brushed nickel.
Floors are existing, painted Benjamin Moore Decorator White.
