If you’ve read the blog for a while, you probably will remember seeing other projects by Andrew Howard of Andrew Howard Interior Design on Home Bunch. Andrew is a well-known interior designer and I am a huge fan of his work. Every home he designs seems to be a happy place. He truly knows how to bring color to a room like no one else.
This time around, he designed a vacation home in Naples, Florida for a retired couple that spends half of the year in this beautiful place. This home is located just across from the bay on a quiet street, and this is the type of neighborhood where you can’t go very far without seeing someone walking a dog or people riding bikes. Paradise? Certainly – inside and out!
Andrew gives us input on how he designed this inspiring colorful coastal home: “The objective was to make it a comfortable getaway in a warm place. The color palette was very fresh and vibrant and we wanted the house to feel like the place everyone in the neighborhood would want to hang out.” I certainly would! Take a look at this house tour, it will make you wish you were on vacation…
“The kitchen had lots of open shelving and plenty of room for barstools. I would say it is a very conversational kitchen where someone at the range would find it easy to interact with everyone in the room. The open shelving allows for display of decorative items, but these aren’t things that sit on the shelves, these are things that are often used. We painted the Ann Morris lights a custom blue to tie it into the soft colors of the backsplash and to break up the white. The barstools are faux leather and can withstand anything from chocolate-y kids’ hands to spilled drinks without staining at all.” – Andrew Howard.

“This house does not have a formal dining room so the one place the homeowners can eat other than the island is here. We started with the curtain fabric which color scheme is very happy. The leaf theme carried from the chandelier and into different shapes on the art that reminded me of Matisse in some ways. The host chairs are taller and more comfortable while the side chairs are darker and in an outdoor fabric to withstand dogs, grandchildren or whatever comes their way.” – Andrew Howard.

“I am not making the case that lavender trim is going to start being a thing in powder rooms, but in a sense I kind of am. I love taking an unexpected color out of a wallpaper and using it for the trim. The mirror is totally unexpected and I think that it works perfectly. The wallpaper by Katie Ridder has always been a favorite of mine and is really perfect in almost any powder room or small space.” – Andrew Howard.

“This room is on the first floor and is the primary guest room in the house. We painted the walls a soft blue, which was a great pair to the soft coral fabric on the headboard. Most likely if you were a guest due to proximity this would be the room you would stay in and we wanted it to feel light and welcoming.” – Andrew Howard.

“I feel like every house needs wallpaper in at least one of the bedrooms… this paper with the climbing stalks felt perfect with the taller ceilings of this bedroom. By mixing pink and navy it’s a little something for the boys and something for the girls and the shaped headboard gives it a youthful feel.” – Andrew Howard.

“The family has 5 boys and 3 grandchildren. We wanted the rooms to feel gender neutral for the most part, but this one was certainly the most masculine of the bunch. The red white and blue palette started from the curtains and the end table is a vintage piece that we striped out to work with the fabrics.” – Andrew Howard.

Bedroom Inspiration: ” I tend to use softer colors in master bedrooms. I think a master bedroom should first and foremost a place where you feel comfortable resting and not a place full of wild patterns and colors. The walls are actually wallpaper done in a cross hatch pattern in two colors and the end result is very soothing.” – Andrew Howard.

“This room was almost finished when we started. Because the sheetrock goes so high we wanted to have something to break it up and add pattern and texture to the room. We chose a small scale Quadrille paper which is very graphic against the neutral floor.” – Andrew Howard.
