Being a homeowner is a very time consuming job. With all of the various moving parts to a home, trying to keep up with them all can be very hard to do and as the winter months approach, now is the time most homeowners are starting to worry about their home central heating. There are a number of different misconceptions people have regarding the running of their heating unit, which can cause a lot of confusion and wasted money. Here are a few of the most common misconceptions most homeowners have regarding their heating system.

Closing Off Vents Will Lower Energy Bills

The first misconception most homeowners have when it comes to the heating system in their home is that cutting off the vents in rooms not used will reduce the amount of energy used. This is not the case and usually the cutting off of the vents will create an imbalance in the air flow through the vents. This air flow imbalance will lead to your unit not cycling off properly, which will make it run continuously. In some cases, this lack of air may cause furnace repairs.

Adjusting the Thermostat Higher Will Make the Home Hotter Faster

Another misconception most homeowners have when it comes to their heating unit is that if they crank up the thermostat, the house will get hotter faster. This is not the case at all due to the fact that the boiler will produce at the same rate regardless of the temperature. The only thing you are doing when cranking up the thermostat is making the unit run longer. Instead of increasing the cost of your energy bills due to your temperature settings, you need to leave the dial where it is set.

The Heating System Filter Isn’t That Important

Yet another very popular misconception homeowners have regarding their heating system is that the filter isn’t very important. Neglecting to change out the air filter in your unit can lead to a number of negative consequences, namely a restriction in the air flow. Having the air flow in your unit restricted will cause the unit to work overtime trying to get down to desired temperatures. By consistently overworking the heating unit you have, you will be at risk of having mechanical breakdowns on a frequent basis. Changing the filter in your unit should be on the top of your list of priorities due to its importance.

Find a professional to help to keep your unit running perfectly during this winter. Look for the best people in your area.
