The study of interior design can be complex and interesting. Coordinating shapes, sizes, light, dark, and color can produce profound effects on a room. These effects involve more than simple enjoyment of the space or changing the feel and flow of the room.
The color wheel can be thought of like a rainbow in circular form. The wheel matches up primary and secondary colors with gradient colors created by mixing those pigments. Standard color wheels consist of the following:
Analogous color schemes are popular in decorating. You may have seen analogous color samples at your local paint store or on display at a furniture retailer. These analogous schemes provide a slightly monochromatic look, and are easier to create than you might think. Simply pick a base color, then find some friends nearby on the color wheel.
Some popular analogous color combinations include:
The possibilities are endless, but this should get you started creating your color palette.

Your color palette is like your whole room plan. Colour palettes comprise your chosen tints for a room, including multiple aspects of the color wheel. Some projects may favor complementary colors, while others may look better with analogous colors.
Many decorators will combine color groupings to highlight different room aspects, too. Another popular palette idea is called the “60-30-10 Rule.” This idea calls for picking three shades. Decorate with 60 percent of the dominant color, 30 percent of the secondary color, and 10 percent of your accent color.
Contrasting warm and cool hues can easily change the mood of your design, such as the creation of a fiery Tuscan kitchen or a calming bathroom oasis. And don’t forget to use your favorite colors, too, as designing a palette is a personal expression and a chance to let your personality shine.
Professional courses will teach you how to select palettes that look great and teach you in-depth knowledge on color theory, but you can find inspiration on your own, as well.

Look on Pinterest or browse for home improvements here on Home Bunch. Instagram is also a great place for finding inspiration online, with talented professional and amateur photographers posting stunning interiors.
But you don’t need to limit yourself to studying only interior design and furnishings. Find inspiration in nature. Grab a National Geographic magazine to refresh yourself with deep blues of the ocean or the red rocks of the desert. Take a hike around your neighborhood to see how spring flowers accent the local fences and foliage. You can also check out environmentally friendly design materials, taking that natural feel to another level.
Travel through a fabric store to see the array of purples you can choose from to make that royal room shine for your favorite little princess. Perhaps you’d like to explore a library to understand how gold leafed pages interact with dark bindings in reds, greens, and golds.
Studying color is both academic and organic. Take your inspiration wherever you can find it, and apply the principles you learn from talented designers and instructors to tie it all together. Take the first step in your interior decoration career by understanding color theory.
