Moving is not something that people usually enjoy. It’s hard to look at all the possessions you’ve accumulated over the years and have to choose what items to bring with you and what items will be left behind. These are difficult choices that are sometimes necessary because of a change of jobs or a desire to be closer to friends or family.

When it’s time to make the move, a major decision is whether you want to move everything by yourself, or if you want to hire a professional moving company. Time and money are usually the major factors in these decisions.

Here are a few simple ways that can help make your moving experience easier and quicker:

Coastal Farmhouse interiors

Set a schedule. The first thing you need to do is get motivated and stay motivated. One of the best ways to keep yourself on task is by setting a schedule. Set a target date that you want to be moved out of your current residence, and a date that you want to be fully moved into your new home. This will help you avoid procrastination. You can also set daily or weekly goals to pack your things from different rooms, so that you don’t have to worry about feeling like you have to get everything boxed up all at once.

Clearly label all moving boxes. When you’re packing your belongings, put them securely in boxes and label the outside of each box. The labels should clearly state what is in each box, and what room in the home it will belong to. You might also want to color-code your boxes to correspond to different rooms or number them. All of this can help make unpacking at your new place a lot more efficient.

Photograph the connections for your electronic devices. Before you pack your television or computer, take a quick picture or two of all the connections in the back of the device. This will help you to remember exactly where each wire and plug is supposed to go when it’s time to unpack. It will save you a lot of time and effort, because you don’t have to rely on owners manuals that you may or may not have anymore.

Donate anything that isn’t going with you. If you have furniture, clothing or other items that you aren’t taking with you, don’t just leave them in the home. Instead, donate them to family members or friends. It’s a great way to thank them if they are helping you pack. If there are items that no one wants, donate them to charity.

These are just a few of the many common sense ways to help make your move less stressful. Moving can be a pain, but it’s something that you probably won’t have to do very often in your life. Taking the time to properly plan can make the experience go by faster, so that you can spend more time enjoying your new home and new surroundings.
