If you’re looking for ideas to update your home in 2016, these beautiful interiors should bring some inspiration to you. Designed by Alison Kandler Interior Design, this East Coast shingle style house features traditional interiors with lots of color and fun designs. There’s nothing boring about this home and nothing that you wouldn’t love to live with! A lovely mix of patterns, wallpapers, graphic shapes and colors all come together for the comfort and joy of this young family.
As you will see here, you’ll find many ideas that could inspire you to apply them into your home when the new year arrives. Truly, the entire house is full of surprises and beautiful spaces, but I have to admit that my favorite room of the house is the kitchen. The farmhouse-style kitchen features a layout that is perfect for family life, with its own custom breakfast nook and banquette. Decking ceilings and warm white cabinets contrast beautifully with the dark-stained hardwood floors.
But not only are the interiors full of great ideas, this home also features the most ingenious small backyard with pool I’ve seen! It features a good-sized pool fenced with glass to keep it safe for the kids and multiple entertaining areas for the entire family. This is truly an inspiring idea!
Take a look and let me know what idea you would like the most!

Living Room
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 2: Don’t be afraid of color! Reinvent your living room by adding some fresh color. You can add color with furniture, art and accessories. Remember, you don’t need to add bold colors like we see above, you can add subtle colors as well. The idea is to add more of the colors you love around your home.
Dining Room
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 3: Use more wallpaper! This dining room is full of personality and the ceiling wallpaper surely brings even more interest to it. Add your favorite wallpaper style to your dining room or, if you prefer, try it in small space like the powder room or laundry room.
Lighting
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 4: Change your lighting! If you can’t afford changing your lighting in the entire house, try to change it in the main rooms like the dining room, kitchen and living room.
The stunning chandeliers above are Sara Milk Glass Chandelier from Canopy Designs.
Kitchen
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 5: Give your kitchen a “facelift”: Focus on the cabinets. Of all the rooms in our house, the kitchen is where we spend most of our time at, and it’s no surprise that most homeowners want to change something about their current kitchen. Start this year by picking a new color for your cabinets or by choosing a better flooring to finish the look.
The farmhouse kitchen above uses semi-gloss Benjamin Moore PM-20 China White on the cabinets.
Floors are an 8″ French Oak with an oil finish.
Barstools
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 6: Kitchen “facelift”: Replace or paint your barstools: Replace your barstools if they’re aren’t in good shape, but if they’re still good, paint them to change their look completely. You can also try to find vintage-looking barstools like the ones above and paint them in a bold color to make them look like new again.
The barstools above are from Mulligan in Los Angeles.
Kitchen Pantry
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 7: Kitchen “facelift”: Kitchen Pantry: Consider yourself lucky if you have a walk-in pantry and start showing it off! Add beautiful shelving, a nice light fixture and a glass door to give it an open feel.
Family-Friendly Kitchen Ideas
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 8: Kitchen “facelift”: Create a more family-friendly kitchen: Bring family-friendly ideas into your kitchen to make your life easier. The fridge doors feature a chalkboard and a magnetic fabric board. The magnetic fabric board is from Weitzner.
Clock is a vintage find from a local flea-market.
Countertop & Hardware
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 9: Kitchen “facelift”: Countertop & Hardware: Let’s be honest, countertop never comes cheap, especially if you’re opting for stone. When choosing a new contertop for your kitchen, make sure to keep your budget in mind and look for the best option in different places in your area.
The countertop above is quartz from Walker Zanger.
Another way to change the look of your kitchen is by replacing its hardware. You can keep it simple or add some fun with ceramic knobs like the ones we see in this kitchen.
The kitchen knobs are from Anthropologie.
Kitchen faucet is Country Side Lever Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet With Metal Lever by ROHL.
Backsplash
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 10: Kitchen “facelift”: Backsplash: The backsplash is, undoubtedly, one of the most important elements in the kitchen and you shouldn’t neglect it. Choose simple white subway tiles for a classic and economical look or bring some character with geometric tiles like the ones we see here.
Backsplash above are Ann Sacks glass tile.
Sink & Faucet
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 11: Kitchen “facelift”: Sink & Faucet: We all love farmhouse sinks, right? I often recommend it to my clients when designing their kitchen and I haven’t had any client complaining about it. I am positive that a farmhouse sink will add value to your kitchen.
Kitchen faucet and farmhouse sink are by Rohl.
Perimeter counters are Caesarstone Pure White.
Appliances
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 12: Kitchen “facelift”: Appliances: New kitchen appliances are not only beautiful but they’re better than ever! Change your tired appliances to make your life easier and spend less with your energy bills.
Island paint color is Dunn Edwards DEC786 Minor’s Dust.
Kitchen Lighting
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 13: Kitchen “facelift”: Lighting: Few changes can make a big impact in your kitchen. Start by adding new lighting above your kitchen island to update the kitchen’s entire look.
Lighting is Urban Electric Malplaquet.
The ceiling is called decking and it comes in wood or MDF. Ceiling paint color is Benjamin Moore’s China White.
Kitchen Layout
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 14: Kitchen “facelift”: Kitchen Layout: Changing your kitchen layout is not an easy task and it will involve a lot of work and money, but, if you’re going for a full renovation, you might want to consider the layout of the cabinets and try to create a space that works best for you and your family.
Kitchen Dimensions: Approx 17 x 20.
Kitchen Island Dimensions: 5×7.
The kitchen ceiling height is 9′.
Breakfast Nook
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 15: Kitchen “facelift”: Eating Area: Banquettes are a very popular addition to any breakfast nook now for a good reason. It creates a comfortable area for dining and offers more seating space.

Laundry Room
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 16: Patterned Cement Tiles: Every designer I know is using patterned cement tiles and I have to say that I am loving this new trend. You can use these tiles in small spaces such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, mud rooms and they look great even as backsplash!
Foyer
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 17: Secret Passage: This is not a trend, but it’s definitely a fun idea. How about converting your basement door into a secret passage door? This bookcase has a magnetic closure that completely hides the stair access. How cool is that?!
Bedroom
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 18: Texture: Nothing makes a bedroom feel cozier and more welcoming that grasscloth wallpaper. Trust me on this, paint really can’t replace the feeling you get from grasscloth, especially in bedrooms.
This master bedroom features grasscloth wallpaper and a Classic Ring Chandelier from Circa Lighting.
Bathroom
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 19: Bathroom Comfort: Bathrooms should start feeling less stark and more welcoming. Add more comfort to your bathroom by adding a chair or an ottoman. Rugs are welcome as long they’re washable.
Kids’ Room
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 20: Let the kids play! I don’t recommend you changing your kids’ bedroom decor every year, but I cannot stand seeing little kids sleeping in rooms designed for adults. We often see designers talking about “bedrooms that grow with kids”, but I often look at these spaces and I don’t see any personality added to them, and that’s sad. We’re kids only once and I do not agree with creating a room where the decor would look better at my aunt’s house. Kids should be allowed to have a room that shows their personality and their favorite things. I understand that not everyone can have a custom-made bed like we see above, but how about painting the space in their favorite color? We should design our kids’ room with their taste in mind and not ours.
Patio
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 21: Be creative with your outdoor areas. This backyard features McKinnon and Harris outdoor furniture, outdoor curtains and outdoor ceiling heaters.
Small Backyard
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 22: Add a pool to your small backyard: Like I mentioned before, I think this is one of the most creative small backyards I’ve seen! I love the idea of creating a glass fence around the pool and adding an elevated patio for entertaining.
Glass-top Pergola
Interior Ideas to Update your Home in 2016 Tip 23: Glass covered pergola: Adding a high quality glass top to a pergola not only saves you and your guests from rain, its also protects you from warmth and harsh sun rays. You can even add outdoor heaters like we see in the picture above. Isn’t it a brilliant idea?

A Family Home Decorated for Christmas
Hello, my wonderful friends!
I’m so happy to be back with a new post and have you guys around here.
Our home is almost ready for Christmas now. We’re sending some gifts to friends and family members, finishing organizing the house and finishing wrapping the gifts. My husband and I will be preparing some eggnog this week and do some more grocery shopping for our Christmas Eve dinner – my husband is Polish and he prepares a very special dinner for us every year-, then we have our special Christmas brunch and our traditional Christmas dinner. No ones is counting their calories at this time of the year, right? LOL
Are you ready for Christmas? We don’t need to be… all we really need to be is excited, happy and looking forward to it! Christmas is a magical moment, not because of all the food, gifts, but because we have special people around us.
I had very, very little growing up and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all I have today. I sure appreciate having all the food we have, all the gifts we can buy for our kids, but what I appreciate the most is being able to reunite all of the people I love under one roof. Some people, unfortunately won’t be physically by my side, by I know that our love will be spiritually reunited.
This is how the Christmas’ magic works – love surrounds us as long we welcome it in our heart.

I always have been a fan of walpaper, expecially in small areas. All of my baths have something beautiful on the walls. My go to paper is Thibaut.
I use the wallpaper as inspiration for the bedding and wall color.
Hi Judy.
I love wallpaper and Thibaut is one of my favorites as well!
Thank you for sharing this with us!
Have a great week!
Luciane
So many beautiful images. I just love all of the colors! We are almost ready for the big day and preparing the food for Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day lunch. Like you, for us the most important part is being with family (all 22 of us). There’s nothing like it. Wishing you and your beautiful family a wonderful Christmas!! xoxo
What is the gray exterior paint color on the shingles and the name of the white trim color? beautiful combination with the green front door!
