What do you do when the kids are moving out to college for the first time? You get busy and start planning on renovating your kitchen! Every year, I get many requests for kitchen designs and this time of the year until December, the requests for my online interior design services always multiply and I understand why.
It’s never easy to say goodbye to the kids and it can be especially difficult if this is your first year as an empty nester. To make things easier on you, it’s a good idea to get out there, start a new hobby, exercise and — why not! — finally remodel your tired kitchen. I can assure you that will not only get you busy but also entertained for at least a couple of months.
This is exactly what happened to these homeowners when their kids were ready to leave home for college. For a long time, they felt their already small kitchen was cramped and closing in on them. They even considered moving but decided instead to renovate the kitchen. The layout was expanded by architect Nick Cusano of Cusano Associates Architecture +Design. The interior designer, Heidi Piron Design & Cabinetry suggested a transitional design with an innovative use of space to support the mother’s gourmet cooking and all the entertaining they do. Taking into account the owner’s contemporary taste, the designer blended the home’s more traditional style with modern touches. It was a matter of simplifying the design and organizing the kitchen into easy to navigate work zones.
Trust me, projects can’t replace any kid at home, but being busy will help to ease your mind and make you feel you’re doing something new as well.
Isn’t this kitchen perfect? I love its layout and the crisp white cabinets with the custom-made brushed and polished range hood, which is certainly, the focal point of this kitchen.
Kitchen Backsplash
The marble backsplash is nature’s own artwork.
Kitchen Microwave & Oven Wall
Microwave and wall oven is flush with cabinet faces, providing an integrated look and feel to the kitchen.
Kitchen Fridge & Freezer
The Sub-Zero refrigerator is built into the wall for clean, visual appeal.
Kitchen Floating Shelves
The kitchen floating shelves and the 2″x 12″ rectangular tile, add to the simple, clean and modern look to the kitchen.
Under Cabinet Lights
The lighting is recessed and nearly invisible in this kitchen. LED lights were chosen since they are more energy-efficient and cast a warmer light.
Kitchen Elements
Kitchen Countertop: The kitchen island and perimeter countertop, as well the slab backsplash are all Calcutta Gold Marble.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the exactly pendant lights we see above, but Robert Abbey N616 Beehive Pendant is a very similar option. For a cleaner look, you can try Uttermost Bristol 1 Light Beehive Glass Pendant.
