We were lucky enough to see some sun this summer but as the nights start to draw in, many homeowners may be closing the doors on their conservatory for another year. The truth is that a conservatory can add a whole new dimension to your property and it doesn’t only have its uses during the warmer months.
A conservatory is a fantastic addition to any home. Not only does it add extra space for relaxing, entertaining and dining but by its very nature, a conservatory is about bringing the outdoors inside. This doesn’t have to mean bringing the colder temperatures too.
So, how do you transform a conservatory so it is a welcoming place to spend a cozy winter’s evening?
Heat
At the top of the list is keeping the conservatory warm during the cooler months. It is often the case that the conservatory is off limits during winter because it becomes too cold. There are plenty of measures that can be taken to ensure your conservatory is the perfect temperature all year round.
Reputable companies that offer conservatories at great prices will take the time to insulate and damp-proof the ground and structure to prevent cold air from rising and keeping warm air within the completed conservatory.
For those of you who already have your conservatory built, there are some steps that you can take to make your conservatory cozier in the run-up to Christmas.
You can generate heat with the use of central heating or free standing electric heaters but you must take care to minimize heat loss too. Choose a draught excluder for the bottom of the door and ensure that window seals are sound. Additionally, add conservatory blinds to your windows and on the ceiling to keep any heat in.
Flooring
The floors in conservatories tend to get cold in winter but this can easily become overcome with the right choice of flooring. Wooden floors should be used with caution. The ever changing temperatures in a conservatory could cause the wood to split or shrink.
Instead choose tiling for a hard-wearing floor and combine with under floor heating to provide warmth when the nights draw in. Alternatively, choose carpet for a warm and cosy finish.
Whatever flooring you choose, enhance the look and feel of your conservatory with a fluffy rug, the perfect way to keep bare feet warm.
Make it Useful
To ensure that your conservatory is used all year round, consider converting it into a games room or living room to entertain guests as Christmas approaches. The extra space will be invaluable and the view of the frosty garden will make for the perfect setting as you settle down to a Christmas movie.
If your conservatory has a genuine use, it is more likely that friends and family will spend more time there.
Add comfortable furnishings like slipcovered sofas with soft cushions to give the room a cozy appeal and when the summer comes back around, once again it will become the perfect resting place after an evening in the garden.

Oi Luciane, que delicia esse espaço. Morei um tempo na Itália e tínhamos algo semelhante, uma espécie de solarium, ou jardim de inverno. Muito gostoso para os dias frios. Aproveitem a noite de gostosuras e travessuras!

I love conservatories but they aren’t recommended here in Queensland (Australia) as the sun is far too hot. Instead we have verandahs/decks that have pergolas but no sides so that the breezes can come through. The photos above are just gorgeous 🙂
I would love to have a conservatory. Beautiful post.
My dream!! If I get to come back reincarnated…it will be “with a conservatory.” *sigh* franki
Beautiful pictures! Happy Friday!
I’m thinking of having a conservatory and this is just how I would love it to be. I would like to ask what the floor tiles and where they came from but I guess you are in the US – I’m in the UK
