Many architectural feats have found a home in Minneapolis. The recently demolished Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Weisman Art Museum and Old City Hall clock tower are well known structures, but there are also many residences in the city that are just as impressive.
Danny Levin and Drew Perkins, the Minneapolis real estate gurus from HGTV’s “Renovate to Rent,” know all about the amazing properties in the city. They have helped countless property owners and renters find the perfect space. Levin and Perkins say that if you’re looking for unique homes that are nestled among pristine landscapes this is an ideal place to live.
Nicollet Island is one of the most well known neighborhoods in the city. Stunning Victorian-era homes are located on this small island in the Mississippi River that’s adjacent to downtown Minneapolis. In total there are 22 historic homes within 48 acres.
Minneapolis grew into an industrial city early on and this is reflected still today in the homes and buildings. Being a place of innovation, it isn’t surprising that architects developed original styles in Minneapolis. William Purcell’s Prairie School is one of the most famous styles. The style features brick exteriors and flat, squared-off rooflines. Purcell’s own home at 2328 Lake Place is one of the finest of Minnesota’s numerous Prairie School designs.
But you’ll find more than just historic homes in Minneapolis. A number of new, thoroughly modern condos are being built downtown. Some are even retrofitted into old factory buildings in the Mill District. There’s also a lot of new multi-family development happening on the east side of downtown near the Vikings new stadium.
Of course no real estate list would be complete without mentioning the lake houses throughout Minneapolis. They range from small, traditional abodes to full-on mansions. The palatial estates along Minneapolis lakes have become so talked about there’s an entire book dedicated to them. It’s aptly titled “Legendary Homes of the Minneapolis Lakes”.
Why More People Are Moving to Minneapolis
It may not be known for sunny weather like southern California or considered a job-making machine like the Texas metros, but there’s a lot to love about Minneapolis. In recent years it’s become known as a cool hipster haven that’s still very family friendly. That broad appeal shows just how dynamic and appealing a place it is to live.
It’s the Third Most Literate City
People in Minneapolis highly regard education and literacy. The libraries are things of legend, and it’s also where you’ll find Open Book, the largest literacy center in the U.S. With so many literate locals it’s no wonder that 12 Fortune 500 companies are located in the area.
Best Park System in the County
Yes, it’s cold in the winter, but that hasn’t stopped Minneapolis from creating the best urban park system in America. There area dozens and dozens of parks with every activity imaginable along with 51 miles of paved trails and more than 25 miles of unpaved trails for cycling and skiing. Much of the green space is built around the 20 picturesque lakes within the city. The park system also includes the oldest wildflower center in the country, Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary.
You Don’t Need a Car
Minneapolis has been named the most bike-friendly city in the country. The immense hike and bike trail system that winds its way through downtown can connect you to just about everything. Need to head off the trail? The city has heavily invested in making the streets easier for biking. All that work has paid off – more than 10,000 bikers hit the roads every day.
There’s Plenty of Culture

Minneapolis boasts the third largest theater circuit in the U.S., and it’s home to Brave New Workshop, the longest running sketch comedy theatre. In fact, Broadway’s astoundingly successful Lion King musical actually made it’s debut at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, not New York City. Another architectural achievement is Guthrie Theatre, which features a stunning metal exterior.
You can see just about every form of art in the city, including the highly popular Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. It’s the largest garden of its kind with more than 11 acres that showcase dozens of permanent pieces.
Amazing Culinary
If you’re a foodie you will thoroughly enjoy living in Minneapolis. The city was once known for all of the fried food at the state fair, but it is arguably more upscale today. The city has also fully embraced food trucks with more per capita than even Austin and L.A.
