I created the “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” series to open this platform for homeowners to shine and showcase not only their homes but also their inspiring ideas. As most of us know, it’s not easy to create spaces that we love. It says requires time, money and a lot of planning. Today, I have the pleasure to introduce you to Susan Krulikowski of Brookfield Design. She became an interior designer after the age of sixty and I am inspired by her story and I hope you feel the same!
Hello everyone and welcome to my home! I am honored that Luciane chose me to show our house on Home Bunch.
Our home sits at the end of a private road on 10.5 acres of Pickering Valley /French Creek Conservation Trust. We are surrounded by trees and a hidden stream in our backyard. I like to call the style of our home, “California Cool meets Mid-Century Modern”. The house is all about letting the outside, in. The entire back of the house has glass windows and doors from floor-to-ceiling.
My husband, Tim Kullman and I were both widower/widow when we met in 2015. We both had grown children, his – 5, and mine -3. We are also proud grandparents of 10. We wanted to have a place that reflected both of us, hence the new build. We live here with our 11-month-old Australian Labradoodle, Gus.
I love interior design, and had renovated previous homes, so we purchased land and began our house building journey. Building in the height of the Pandemic had its challenges with the costs of supplies skyrocketing and supply chain delays. We were lucky to find a builder, Brian Cox, brian@briancoxbuilders.com, that was a great problem solver and had wonderful and talented subcontractors.
After our home was built, Brian asked me if I would like to help his clients in the building process. So, at the age of 63 years young, I am
“officially “an Interior Designer with my own company @brookfield_design. I work with Brian’s clients on multi-million-dollar home builds and
renovations.
This home was a labor of love. I hope you enjoy!
“In the coming months, in the front and back of the house, cedar trellises supported by black iron hardware will be added above many of the windows to soften the harsh lines. Another delay as a result of supply chain issues.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

The Flooring is from Jeff Dean Hardwood Floors. The wall treatment draws your eyes up and the furnishings and light fixtures sets the tone for the entire home.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“The dining area is between our two living/seating areas and is in front of our kitchen. I ground the table with a custom area rug that coordinates with the area rugs in the two living spaces. The lighting appears to be floating in the air. Nothing obstructs your view from one end of the house to the other.
The dining table is 10’ feet long. I chose 2 benches instead of all chairs to make the table look less crowded.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“Since the Kitchen is open to the Great Room/Dining Area, it needed to coexist with the other spaces, yet be its own distinct area. I wanted a two-toned kitchen, so I went with white flat front cabinets and Walnut cabinets for the Pantry/Refrigerator wall. The island is also Walnut. While white cabinets can be clean and streamlined, almost clinical, by adding the Walnut wood, it added warmth. These two materials are also timeless and won’t be out of date in 10 years.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“I prefer drawers in the lower cabinets, not just for the look but they are easier to find the contents and less bending down. All the lower cabinetry in the house has drawers.
The exhaust hood is plaster. It has a very subtle texture that can be seen close up. The backsplash has gold running through it which helps to elevate the space.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“The sitting area, with the Samsung Portrait TV, has a lower ceiling height and a dramatic black nickel gap wall that spans all the way to the second floor and to the basement. If you like the look of shiplap, nickel gap is the more modern version. By painting the wall black, it helps ground the space, plus hides the TV.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

Media Console- bought at Consignment Shop – similar style: here, here & here.

“Behind the black wall is the Master Bedroom and Bath. When you enter the space, the bathroom is in front of you. Going down a short hallway to the left, flanked by a walk-in closet, you enter the Master Bedroom. The headboard wall has black grass cloth wallpaper to balance out the black porcelain floating fireplace on the opposite wall. Another walk-in closet is behind the gray barn door. Neutral color palettes depend on the use of texture to make them interesting. In the bedroom, we have an abundance of various textures- grass cloth wallpaper, leather bed, porcelain fireplace, wood furniture, glass top side table, loom rug, metal chandelier, and a corduroy upholster chair.
Automatic black blinds controlled by remote are handy to have but are expensive.
Tip- Mount bedside sconces on your wall with adjustable arm control instead of lamps on bedside tables. They take up less room, look cool and if you put in another light switch by the bed, you can turn them off and jump right into bed. ” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“I wanted to add some more blue into the first floor, so I went with this blue handmade tile which extends from floor to ceiling behind the floating vanity. I love the look of marble but not the expense, so I chose large tiles for the floor that gave me the calm, serene look of marble. I took the floor tile and had it run two-thirds up the opposite wall, so when you look in the mirror, you see not only the blue tile but the floor/shower wall tile.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“This is the hallway off of the Entry. White painted Nickel Gap goes up 5’ with a ½” ledge. Because this hallway goes to the garage, it gets heavy use and the wainscotting helps keep the area scuff free. The Laundry/Mudroom is on the right.” -Susan of @brookfield_design.

“The office has amazing light, I chose a moody, dark color. The entire room painted in the same color of blue.
Tip 1- If you have recessed lighting and have any other color but white on your ceilings, have the painter, paint the entire recessed fixture except for the bulb. That way, you just see the light and not the entire encasement.
Tip 2- The paint sheen selected was flat. In retrospect, it should have been a satin or semi-gloss; much better for upkeep.”
