I need to confess something… Coastal interiors are a favorite of mine, especially when mixed with other styles, like we will see in this stunning house tour by Karen Wolf of Karen Wolf Interiors. My love for coastal interior design might be because I live by the beach or maybe it’s because the colors found in a coastal home tend to be soothing and serene, which are a favorite of mine.
It’s good to keep in mind that Coastal Interior Design doesn’t need to be how it used to be ten years ago. Not that there’s anything wrong with adding pictures of crabs on your wall if that’s what makes you happy :), but I think that the new approach for this style is much more appealing and elegant. Take for example this home we’re touring today, the overall vision for this home was Boho Modern Farmhouse. The client wanted to incorporate patterns, textures and soft colors that had a feminine feel while also respecting her husband’s preferences.

“Design direction for the entry was to lighten up the space while keeping the integrity of the old historic charm. When the homeowner bought the house it was all dark wood and dark wood beams, and it was very busy looking. We contemplated removing the beams, but ended up keeping them – the simple act of painting them white was enough to make them less prominent.” – Karen Wolf of Karen Wolf Interiors.

“We replaced all of the old flooring with a modern white french oak in a herringbone pattern. At one point we tried to utilize the grand foyer as a function space, but realized the beauty of the house was reliant on the wide and gracious space of the foyer (so we left it uncluttered). We separated the front portico entrance from the main foyer area with an encaustic style tile, which drove the color choices throughout the space in a soft blue gray, warm browns, and grays. We then picked up the blue gray throughout the open stairway millwork and wove it through carefully, so that it did not overpower the space.” – Karen Wolf of Karen Wolf Interiors.

“The dining area was treated as a modern historical space. We used a non-traditional color palette with a traditional style wallpaper and an unexpected combination of corals and blues to break the main color story from the foyer to the kitchen. We resized the dining room doors so that they were symmetrical and opened them up so that you could see straight through the kitchen all the way through to the family room. “The kitchen was the largest project in the house. We were constrained by support beams that interrupted the space and a header that was too low. This made the kitchen area feel choppy and un-usable. We removed the support beams, raised the header, and integrated all the spaced to create a modern family multi-purpose space.” – Karen Wolf of Karen Wolf Interiors.

The family opted for marble countertops, understanding the beauty of natural material, and that the oversized island was the rock-star of the kitchen.

“Another struggle was that the house had no space for a mudroom for a family with three boys, so we had to integrate cabinetry in an open kitchen area that looked aesthetic but had a utilitarian purpose.”
“The homeowners both worked from home even before covid, and have 3 boys under the age of 10. Every nook and cranny of the house was being utilized with a functional purpose. The kitchen/ eating area was designed to double as a desk area. One of the homeowners prefers to rotate his work locations around the home and there are at least 5 areas that he uses to change up his work routine. The floor, because it’s aged, can handle the high-traffic of the family.”

Color Choices: The color choices were poppy-neutrals: Liveable, soft- enough, and vibrant at the same time. The homeowner used spaces like the dining area to tell a more daring color story , and used the same palette throughout the open-plan house to tie it all together.

“For the Master Bedroom, the clients made selections as a team and were very united in their design vision. The headboard and nightstands are from Anthropologie and are hand-carved, globally inspired, which help in bringing in the boho vibe and texture. Most clients prefer upholstered headboards, so we were thrilled that this client was willing to let us use the bed area to drive the boho vibe, since it is so focal.”
