Are you ready to be transported to a sunny summer day?
Facing the open Atlantic, this oceanfront shingle cottage in Georgetown was up against some of Mother Nature’s harshest elements: sea, wind, salt, and sun. While the original 1960’s ranch had commanding views, it was lightly built and no match for such conditions. Using the existing foundation, Whitten Architects designed a new cottage with an expansion that met Maine’s shoreland zoning guidelines.
The interiors of this oceanfront cottage are colorful and happy and they must have been inspired by the flowery gardens.
Charming distressed wood furniture and comfortable slipcovered furniture are found in many of the rooms in this shingle cottage, making them feel inviting and perfect to relax after a day at the beach.
Nothing feels too precious in this place, vintage furniture and home decor are all very relaxed and you can tell they’re there to be enjoyed, not just looked at. Photo frames display special summer memories, sunny porches invite you to sit and admire the ocean view and the kitchen seems to be just the perfect spot to prepare light and fresh meals.
Oceanfront Shingle Cottage
You can almost feel the warm sunshine and the ocean’s breeze…
Shingle Dream
This shingle cottage was designed with an open floor plan in mind, which includes connected kitchen, dining, and living spaces; a two-story gallery space; second-floor bedrooms; an upper-level bunkroom; and a main-level guest suite.
Garden
This cottage has incredible ocean view and darling gardens!
Front Porch
Charm is added to the this front porch with vintage rocking chairs.
Coastal Vibe
The sun will always shine in this living room!
This space is pure comfort! I am loving how relaxed and charming this room feels.
Eccentric Kitchen
The homeowners of this cottage were an empty-nester couple with many friends and family who return for extended stays and vacations, so creating enough entertainment spaces was key, as was providing ample gallery space for their collection of art and antiques.
Personality was added to this kitchen with some interesting vintage pieces.
Add Some Fun
I love how simple, yet dramatic this kitchen feels.
Mantel
The show-stopper of this family room is the 18th-century mantel — a very special piece for the homeowners.
Patina
The antique mantel with its original paint speaks volumes to this intimate space.
Sunroom
What a view! I also like the yellow ceiling… very unique!
Bedroom
This bedroom is cozy and charming.
Coastal Inspired
Romantic…
Bunk Room
Excellent usage of space. This idea is perfect for an attic room.
Listening to the Waves
Perfect place to think about life… I always feel at peace and closer to God when I am by the ocean… it calms me down and it makes me appreciate more this world.
Dream
Sometimes all we need is a place to be alone with our own thoughts and let our dreams invade our mind. Wouldn’t it be a perfect place for that?

It’s so beautiful! I agree with you, being at the ocean makes you feel closer to God, more connected to nature and the beauty of the world. Especially a place like this that feels like the edge of the world with all of the craggy rocks instead of your typical sandy beach.
Beautiful inspiration for a Tuesday morning! Hope you have a wonderful week.

PS, forgot to comment on the house – so charming – I love the kids room in the attic, great for sleeping all of the grandchildren (since you said this is an empty nester house).
This is so beautiful, I could cry! What a talented team of people that worked on this perfect cottage.
Loooove this house, especially the yellow roof and ceiling, front porch and tall windows in the bedroom. The view’s not to shabby either!
Fabulous!!! So lived in and comfy. The lighting is perfect 🙂
This has to be one of my favorites…the fireplace is the “end all!” Wonderful find!! Yellow is just….happy! franki
