Christmas is the time to relax and enjoy moments with family and friends, but that doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze some quick home improvements in between.
Take a look at these easy, fast and useful ideas to get your home ready for the Holidays.
Repairing Holes in Dry Wall
This is a very simple procedure which will neaten up your walls ahead of the Christmas period.
You will need: some fibre-glass mesh tape, some joint compound (drywall compound), a spatula or putting knife, sandpaper, primer paint and soft brushes.
Start by cutting off a piece of tape about 2-4 inches longer than the hole you’re going to tackle. Ideally this will be adhesive tape, but if not apply a thin layer of joint compound to help it stick.
Then, once you’ve covered the hole with the tape, use either a putty knife or spatula to spread a thin layer of joint compound over the hole and around the area. This may initially make your wall look bumpy, but once you’ve applied one coat, wait for it to dry and then use sandpaper to smoothen the surface until it is unnoticeable. Once you’ve done this, apply a second coat, this time thinner and more spread out to help it blend in with the wall, again wait for it to dry and then sand it.
Now you’ve got two layers dried and sanded down it is a simple matter of using a paintbrush to apply some primer then once that is dry apply paint to the spot so it looks good as new.
Done.
Install Faux Wooden Blinds
Faux wooden blinds come in a variety of colors and sizes and can be a great addition to a room and they’re affordable and easy to install.
You need: faux wooden blinds (buy them based on taking measurements of the window size and height), a drill, some screws, 2 metal receivers (these will usually come with the blinds) and a pencil.
Start by working out where you want to put the brackets, find a spot at the top of each side of the window and make sure they fit snugly touching the glass, but with a gap between the brackets and the ceiling. Once you’ve decided on the spots, mark them with a pencil.
Now drill holes in the places you’ve marked, making sure that the hole you create is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw.
Align the mounting bracket with the screw holes and insert screws to secure the brackets on the left and right side of the window opening.
Finally clip your faux blinds into place snapping the levers shut after you’ve put them in.
Covering Up Damp
Before you paint over the unsightly damp stains you’ll need to make sure you treat and solve the problem first.
However, once you’ve treated it – the covering up part is a quick process. Firstly, make sure the surface is clean and free from any dust. Apply one coat of a Ronseal’s anti-damp paint and leave to dry.
Squeaky Doors
Fix one of the most annoying house problems with this quick and easy solution. Simply buy an aerosol lubricating oil such as WD-40 and spray it directly onto the hinge.
If this doesn’t fix the problem – take the door out of its frame, remove the hinge pin and clean with wire wool.
