This shingle-style cottage in a small coastal village, was designed to provide its owners a cherished spot on Maine’s rocky coastline. Sited one block east of a home they had summered in for years, the new house conveys a commanding 180-degree view of the ocean and surrounding natural beauty. Having long admired the historic shingle-style cottages that dot the coast of Maine, the homeowners wanted their new oceanfront cottage to evoke these qualities, while appearing like it has always been there.
A couple nearing retirement with two adult children, the homeowners sought a house with enough space for their expanding family. The architects from Whitten Architects designed a large kitchen, dining, living, and entertainment space with fireplaces and a barnlike garage with future upper-level guest space. The kitchen and main living spaces open onto a generous waterfront screened porch that includes an outdoor fireplace. Careful planning affords an ocean view from all bedrooms and a second-floor balcony. An attic bunkroom, tucked under the eaves, provides space for future grandchildren and the next generation of summer memories.
While at first glance it has passed for something much older, in reality it is an energy-efficient cottage appropriate for today. A rain screen wall system, high-performance windows, spray-foam insulation, geothermal heating with radiant floor delivery, and heat recovery ventilation provide long-term value and comfortable year round living.
Shingle Style Oceanfront Cottage
This is the kind of cottage that takes my breath away.. the ones that are inspired by its surroundings.
Front Door
Classic beauty!
The siding on the home is Maibec eastern white cedar shingles with a bleaching oil finish. The roof is western red cedar shingles.
Entryway
Don’t expect to see cold spaces in this cottage. All the rooms are warm and homely. You will find beauty without pretentiousness.
Floors are “edge grain” Douglas Fir flooring.
Coastal Touch
I really like the idea of having a built-in bench in an entry hall.
Cozy Living Room
Summers in Maine are sunny and gorgeous, but winters, not so much. Having a fireplace can be very handy during the winter months.
Don’t you love the classic brick detail? Also, note the built-ins on either side of the fireplace.
Kitchen
To be very honest, at first I wasn’t very sure about this kitchen, then, the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It’s so original!
I am loving the open shelves by the range area, the beadboard backsplash (by the sink) and light color on the cabinets. It feels natural and earthy.
The wood of the cabinetry is Hickory.
Transitional Kitchen
The backsplash and countertops are all soapstone.
Bookshelves
What a fantastic usage of space!
Light fixtures are from Brass Light Gallery.
Bunk Room
This is the fun room, where rules are kept to a minimum! 🙂
I am loving the bedding… very coastal!
Den
I could spend hours reading in this cozy den. This is such a sweet space!
Coastal Dream
Take time to appreciate your surroundings…

Porch
A screened porch with ocean views, a swing and a fireplace? Yes, please!
Garage
You shouldn’t neglect your garage. Add beautiful hardware and light fixtures to make it feel more attractive.
