Every rustic home deserves a beautiful, rustic-style kitchen. After all, it’s not just a place where you prepare meals—it’s also a place for families to come together and share a cup of coffee in the morning, or a place to catch up and share stories after a busy day. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and it should therefore be the type of environment that encourages everyone’s love for both food and family.
Rustic kitchens are already as homey as they sound, but you can make them even homier by filling them with accents and decorations that are in perfect harmony with the rest of the room.
To achieve the picturesque rustic kitchen of your dreams, here are a few creative ways to decorate your kitchen and make it even cozier and more comfortable for you and the whole family:
The color of your walls can help create the right ambience for your kitchen. Now, ideally, if you want a kitchen with a homey and rustic feel, your walls should be made of wood or distressed brick. But if that’s not an option, then you can simply paint the walls with pale, minimalist colors like beige, pale yellow, or eggshell.
Of course it can really be any color you want, but make sure to choose light-colored paint to give your kitchen a clean and bright aesthetic. It should also contrast nicely with the darker palette of the wooden furniture pieces that are characteristic of any rustic space. You can cover your walls with charming vintage artwork that feature wooden accents, and possibly elements of the rural countryside.
In addition, you can use copies of old family recipes to decorate your rustic-themed room. This would also serve the purpose of showcasing the “culinary legacy” of your family. Place them in vintage frames that you can make yourself to avoid spending too much on decorations for your kitchen.
Remember to think outside of the box and try to make use of the old items that are stored away in your attic or basement.
Every dreamy, rustic-themed kitchen would not be complete without displaying those beloved coffee mugs and cups! Instead of just stacking them in your shelves, use a wooden rack that you can hang them on for easy storage and display. You can easily buy one if you aren’t the DIY type, but if you’re up for a fun little project and want to save a bit of money, just do it on your own. All you need is a hammer, nails, small hooks that are strong enough to hold your coffee cups, and old wood pallets or repurpose any old furniture that you have lying around the house.
Shelves are an important fixture in any kitchen, so make sure to install some in yours. Wooden shelves are ideal, as they lend a particularly rustic feel to any space. They are also extremely functional—you can use them to store and organize your ingredients and spices, or you can use them to display your decorative pieces.
For additional decor, stack colorful plates and mugs or place some family photos in beautiful custom picture frames and display them on the shelves for that cozy, homey look.
Pots aren’t the only items that can be hung in the kitchen! A creative way to conveniently store those onions, garlic bulbs, and other ingredients and crops that you cook with everyday is by hanging them in baskets above your kitchen work area.
You don’t have to buy rustic-style racks to achieve this style. All you have to do is make use of your old window frames, screw in some hooks, and voilà—your very own hanging rack!
Of course a rustic kitchen wouldn’t be complete without some truly rustic light fixtures. They can be a great focal point for the kitchen, as well as a truly stylish way to add warmth and brighten up the place. You can use simple light bulbs or make your own mason jar hanging light fixture.
You can also add hanging plants if you like. Just make sure that they aren’t too big, so that they won’t overpower the lights. These kinds of lights can also heat up easily, so space them properly to avoid burning the plants.
Shop at flea markets and thrift stores to find the perfect vintage wooden table for your kitchen. Or, if you have some basic carpentry skills, make use of old slabs of wood to create your own one-of-a-kind table. It will definitely be a useful addition to your kitchen—it can serve as a work surface to prep ingredients, a convenient place to store small kitchen appliances, or even a space to display your kitchen decor.
Wood furniture is a staple in rustic interiors, so this will definitely add to your desired theme.
When choosing decorative accents for your kitchen, make sure to look for charming pieces that are a bit rough around the edges. Choose items that are close to or reminiscent of nature, which should be anything handcrafted, timeworn, distressed, or made or natural, organic materials like wood or wicker.
