Mold is not something a homeowner wants to deal with. Unfortunately, it is quite common and relatively easy for mold to grow. The environment needed for mold growth can happen at any time and anywhere.
Knowing what causes mold and where you are more likely to find it, will help you stay on top of preventing mold from growing in the first place. However, if it catches you off guard, you’ll want to begin mold removal right away.
Let’s take a look at what causes mold to grow and what the perfect environment looks like.
For mold to grow in your home, certain conditions need to be met. If your home fits into some of the following factors, there is a possibility you will have mold:
What are some of the causes of mold?
One of the best ways for mold to start growing is through humidity. Moisture is one of the critical conditions for mold to grow, and humidity is one of the biggest reasons someone would have moisture in his or her home.
When there is too much humidity in your house, it makes it difficult for any water laying around to dry up. The air is already heavy with moisture, so the standing water remains. If you notice any spots of water around your house (around pipes in the kitchen and bathroom are your best spots to look at), there is a good chance mold will start to grow if it hasn’t already.
If you find your house if fairly humid, you’ll want to get that under control. Having a dehumidifier will help absorb some of the moisture out of the air.
When there is little to no ventilation in a home, nothing is circulating the air around. All of the humidity and moisture that gathers throughout the day stays within the home instead of being circulating outside. When this happens, it creates a breeding ground for mold.
When there is inadequate ventilation and excess moisture in the air, pools of water may form throughout the home. This becomes a significant problem in areas of the house that are prone to excess moisture, like the bathroom and kitchen.
It is quite common to find mold where there is something leaking. When a pipe in the bathroom starts to drip, the water pools down below. More than likely the pipes are stored in areas away from the eyes, which means the water will not be noticed either. The result, the leak remains unnoticed, and mold will begin to form.
The same can go for a leak in the ceiling. Although these leaks are more likely to be spotted right away, it sometimes only takes 24 to 48 hours for mold to start. When there is heavy rainfall, and the ceiling cannot handle the water, it will find its way into the walls, insulation and eventually inside your home.
