If you plan on treating yourself to a beautiful new sofa this year, you may just want to do a little research before spending hundreds, or even thousands of dollars on the sofa of your choice.
Though there are of course basic and obvious tips such as measuring your living room before you go out to buy, here are a few more to think about:
Make Sure You Know What You Want
Whether you want loose back cushions or attached cushions, it’s always best to work out which suite you want before you head off to the showroom. Not only will it save you time, but also money if you are to later change your mind.
Besides the small aspects of a sofa, as you are probably well aware, there are also a wide range of differing styles.
From L-shaped sofas right through to Chesterfields, it is important to consider what size, shape and of course, what style sofa would be appropriate for you and your home.
Whereas a beautiful leather corner sofa by Hello Sofa may suit a large living room that is enjoyed by a family, a chesterfield sofa for example, may not be able to provide the same service.
In fact, L shaped sofas are perfect for people with large families as they afford far more room for individuals to lounge, play and rest together.
Chesterfields however, are often viewed as far more formal pieces of furniture, so if you are planning on having a few dinner parties in the future, perhaps this is where one may fit into your plans.
It is therefore important that you think about what exactly you want to do with your sofa once it has been delivered to your home.
Check on Delivery
Once that the sofa arrives to your home, run your hand along the edges of the sofa to check that the corners are well-padded.
Whilst you are doing this, make sure that the frame of the sofa does not make any creaking noises. If the frame does make noise, this often means that the wood is either weak or the joints aren’t as sturdy as they should be.
If the sofa has any exposed metal parts, make sure that they are smooth and do not present any sharp edges.
Aside from the edges of the sofa, make sure that the back of the suite is also free from any irregular bumps and hard spots; a tight back is particularly important in a sofa as throughout its life these irregularities may continue to grow.
For fire safety reasons, make sure to check the gold Upholstered Furniture Action Council (UFAC) label to make sure that the sofa has been manufactured to the appropriate safety standards. If this tag is present, it means that the furniture that you have bought will be more resistant to fire. According to the UFAC, since its foundation in 1978, the number of household fires has lowered since their standards were put into place.

I love most of them! It would be hard to narrow it down. The apartment in the top pic is so cool.
All great tips Luciane and I love the assortment of sofas you’ve shown. I really want a tufted sofa but the husband doesn’t like them and to be honest they don’t fit in our life style.
