Handles or Knobs?

One of the first things you need to consider is whether you want door handles or door knobs, providing you don’t already have existing spindle holes in your door. Determine the function of the handle (passage, privacy, dummy or keyed entry) and consider who is going to be using the door and which is best for your house in terms of functionality as well as aesthetically. Keep in mind that in terms of practicality, children and the elderly may find knobs slightly harder to use than handles, which require no twisting motion of the wrist to open. On the other hand, knobs could be considered a safer option for children as they are less likely to catch clothing or hurt themselves.

For external door hardware, you want to consider the outdoor environment before making a choice on the finish. If you live in a coastal region for example, finishes such as matte black or satin chrome are good choices as they won’t tarnish as easily. In this case, opt for lacquered (uncoated) finishes.
