Happy weekend, my friends! I hope you’re being able to take some time off to relax and spend some peaceful time.
What makes your house a home for you? For me is, without any doubt, my family and the memories we create under our roof. And it’s this love for my family that motivates me to make our house feel comfortable, inviting and welcoming for each one of us.
As an interior designer and more importantly, as a mother of three, I know a few tricks to keep my house feeling updated and refreshed for each season without having to spend too much money.
Creating a beautiful home is for me, almost like therapy. 🙂 I feel happier and calmer when I see everything clean, organized and in harmony. Add some fresh flowers (or even a few faux botanicals), change those tired, cheap pillows for something that makes you smile and open your windows and allow the fresh air and the sunshine in! Let’s fill our home with love!
According to some experts “all interior design elements – such as color, texture and pattern – affects how we feel on a biological and psychological level as our brains secrete neurochemicals as we experience our built environments” (from Best Health). My personal experience is that, if my house feels messy and cluttered (which is easy to happen with small children at home), I don’t feel as calm as I usually am. It’s harder to concentrate and things seem to be more stressful. Whereas when my house is organized and clean, I feel happier and more productive.
Paint color is a big part of your home – inside and out – and it’s a relatively cheap way to refresh not only your walls but also your cabinets and exterior. My favorite colors for interiors are Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray, Sherwin Williams Useful Gray and Sherwin Williams Natural Choice. My favorite Whites are Benjamin Moore Simply White, Sherwin Williams Pure White, Sherwin Williams Extra White (great for trim!) and Benjamin Moore White Dove.

There was a time where only the rich could have beautiful lighting. Don’t you agree? 🙂 Thank goodness this is no longer the case! Lighting is more affordable than ever and if you’ve read the blog you know I’m always sharing some great and affordable finds with you.
For me, lighting can make or break a space… simple as that! And trust me, choose the wrong lighting and chances are that your home will look outdated and tacky. The good news is that lighting is an easy change and with just a few bucks you can make a big impression!

Home décor is what gives your home a personality and this is why I feel we should stick with neutral wall colors. Bring color and a change with new pillows and if possible, invest in two rugs for your Great Room. One should be for warmer months and the other, for the colder months. Changing them from time to time will allow your home to feel refreshed. Try to do the same with your pillows and some decorative items. I tend to add more coastal décor during summer.

Do I need to say anything about this? Apparently, yes! Many of us tend to beautify the main rooms of the house but we neglect the spaces that are not always seen by our guests. We forget that we should be prioritizing ourselves and our own comfort level.
Do invest in a beautiful bed, in a really good mattress and in the best linens you can afford. I promise you will feel happier every time you get under your fresh linens and feel hugged by their comfort. You deserve that!

When it comes to landscaping, the average return at resale of your home is about 100 percent, so why not spend some time outside this spring and summer to add some extra curb-appeal to your home? To do it affordably, talk to your neighbors to see what type of plants work with their soil and visit your local garden centers looking for discounts on plants. Try to choose plants that offer some color and vary on their heights to add some interest and don’t forget to add some extra comfy outdoor furniture to enjoy the work you have done outside of your home.
