The HVAC system in your home plays an important role. Without it, you’re not going to have AC during hot summers or heat during cold winters. This makes it essential that you keep your HVAC system in proper working condition.

Unfortunately, HVAC systems can break down over time. They are especially prone to breaking during the winter, when there is a strain on the system as it operates around the clock. With winter approaching, now is a good time to learn about the problems you may face with your HVAC system this season and what you can do about them.

Your HVAC System Won’t Turn On

The most obvious sign that you have something wrong with your HVAC system is when it won’t turn on. There are several things that could cause this to happen. Perhaps one of the internal components broke down, or maybe there is something wrong with the power source. Whatever the issue, you’ll know something is wrong when you go to turn on the heat, and nothing happens.

To fix this, consult your owner’s manual. It may have some suggestions on how to reboot the system, or to check the power supply. If you’re lucky, simply rebooting the system is all you’ll need to do.

Your Home Doesn’t Heat Up

Sometimes your HVAC system seems to turn on, but it doesn’t provide you with any heat. One minute you turn the heat on, then twenty minutes later you realize it’s still cold in your home. It sounds like the system is running, but there is no heat coming out of the vents.

In situations like this, you may have a problem with blocked vents or with the fans inside your system. Sometimes cleaning out your HVAC system will do the trick, but not always. Since the entire point of having an HVAC system during the winter is to provide heat, you’ll want to get this checked out by a professional sooner rather than later.

Poor Efficiency from Your HVAC System

Does it seem to take too long for your home to heat up? Do you remember a time when it didn’t take so long? Or maybe you’ve noticed a spike in your energy bills, and you suspect your HVAC system to be the culprit. If so, you’re probably experiencing poor efficiency in your system. This is a problem, especially during colder months.

Poor efficiency could have several causes. To start, look inside your return vents and make sure nothing is clogged. Next, check your air filter and see if it’s time for a new one. If the entire system looks clean, and you don’t need an air filter, call a professional HVAC contractor.

Lack of Insulation

Finally, you may think you have a problem with your HVAC system, but the root of the problem is poor insulation in your home. If your home is poorly insulated, your HVAC system will generate the necessary heat, but it will all just exit your home through cracks and gaps. This will result in your home feeling colder, and you spending more on energy bills.

To fix this, you’ll want to examine your home’s insulation. Are there cracks around your doors? Are your windows sealed shut? Is there enough insulation between the outer walls and the outside of your home? A professional HVAC company can give you a better idea if you’re doing enough, but for starters, just make sure all noticeable cracks are sealed around the entrances to your home (such as under and above doors). A little fix like this can go a long way toward saving you money.

How to Fix Your Broken HVAC System

If you’re experiencing any of the problems above, or something else, it’s time to get your heating system fixed. You never know when the temperature is going to drop, so you’ll want a reliable HVAC system in your home when it does.

Rather than trying to fix it yourself (and possibly making it worse), call in a local professional. There are professional HVAC repair services all over the country that can help you out at any time. Find a few in your area, compare their online reviews, and then make an appointment.

Repairs can sometimes take a while, especially when replacement parts are needed. That’s why it’s a good idea to get on top of HVAC repairs as soon as you suspect a problem. Hopefully, the above list will give you some idea as to what to look out for, and you’ll be able to get through the winter with a fully functioning HVAC system. Stay warm!
